Sunderland revisit their greatest FA Cup moments as they head to League One’s bottom side Port Vale on Sunday in the fifth round. Sunderland Echo notes it is their first appearance at this stage since 2015.
The tale begins at Wembley in 1973, Leeds United 0-1 Sunderland. Ian Porterfield struck on 32 minutes and Jimmy Montgomery’s superb double save from Trevor Cherry then Peter Lorimer proved decisive. The Stadium of Light’s main stand now bears Montgomery’s name.
In 1992, a replay against Chelsea followed a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. Peter Davenport scored, Dennis Wise levelled late, then Gordon Armstrong headed in Brian Atkinson’s corner past Dave Beasant. Sunderland beat Norwich City in the semis before Liverpool won the final.
In 2012 under Martin O’Neill, Sunderland beat Arsenal 2-0 in the fifth round. Kieran Richardson’s deflected free-kick set them on their way, then Seb Larsson hit the post and the rebound went in off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Everton ended the run after a Goodison draw and a 2-0 replay.
In 2004, extra time settled the fifth-round replay at Birmingham after a 1-1 draw on Wearside. Substitute Tommy Smith struck in the 99th and 115th minutes for 2-0. Millwall then beat Sunderland in the Old Trafford semi after they had overcome Sheffield United.
In 2023, Sunderland trailed at Shrewsbury to Matthew Pennington with 10 minutes left. Ross Stewart and Luke O’Nien netted in added time to snatch a 2-1 win. Fulham later ended the run in the fifth round at Craven Cottage.
