Sunderland capped a landmark 2025/26 under Regis Le Bris by finishing seventh in the Premier League and securing a first-ever Europa League place.
They had returned to the top flight via a Championship play-off final win over Sheffield United, with many predicting a relegation fight. According to Sunderland Echo, an astute summer brought in Robin Roefs, Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey, setting the platform for what followed.
On opening day, promotion mainstays Dan Ballard, Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda all scored in a comfortable win against West Ham United. A defeat at Burnley a week later proved a rare setback.
Highlights stacked up, including victories over Chelsea and Nottingham Forest and a league double against Newcastle United. There were hard-earned draws with Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and eventual champions Arsenal.
Based on Premier League minutes, the XI comprised goalkeeper Robin Roefs 3,150, full-backs Trai Hume 3,040 and Nordi Mukiele 2,802, and centre-backs Dan Ballard 2,149 and Omar Alderete 2,936. The midfield and attack featured Granit Xhaka 2,903, Noah Sadiki 2,896 and Habib Diarra 1,408, with Chemsdine Talbi 1,565 and Enzo Le Fee 2,936 out wide, and Brian Brobbey 1,934 up front.
