Sunderland host Liverpool on Wednesday night seeking to preserve an unbeaten Stadium of Light record, with expected goals data underlining a clear gap between the sides' attacking output.
Sunderland Echo notes that Manchester United top the Premier League xG chart on 1.80xG, with Liverpool second on 1.75xG and Arsenal at 1.74xG. Manchester City are next on 1.67xG, while Sunderland sit 18th on 1.15xG, ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers on 1.12xG and Burnley on 1.07xG.
The Black Cats remain inside the top 10 after Saturday’s defeat at title favourites Arsenal, and optimism on Wearside persists under head coach Regis Le Bris.
City, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all dropped points on Wearside this season, which fuels belief that Sunderland can take something again on home soil.
Arne Slot’s side will hope to strengthen their top five push at the Stadium of Light. Their strong average xG marks them out as one of the division’s slicker attacking units.
Reflecting on the Emirates loss, Le Bris said his team showed personality with and without the ball but were punished after losing possession twice. He felt Sunderland had chances early in the second half to get back into it, and stressed the need for resilience ahead of another home test in three days.
