Three-quarters of Premier League fans oppose VAR, a Football Supporters’ Association survey of nearly 8,000 supporters has found. According to ExpressAndStar.com, just over half of respondents attend more than 15 home games a season.

Some 75.71 per cent said they do not support VAR. More than 70 per cent disputed any improvement in overall accuracy, while 97 per cent said it does not make watching football more enjoyable and over 90 per cent felt the matchgoing experience has not improved.

The time taken to reach decisions remains a major frustration. Fewer than three per cent felt outcomes are delivered in a reasonable time and most did not believe the process is any quicker despite efforts to speed it up.

More than 90 per cent felt technology has stripped spontaneity from goal celebrations. Over half backed in-game announcements to explain decisions, though communication still drew criticism. A narrow majority supported red card reviews, but there was opposition to checks on offsides, fouls and handballs in build-ups to goals.

Goal-line technology was the only system strongly backed, with more than 93 per cent in favour. More than 85 per cent were concerned about expanding VAR as the Premier League plans to canvass clubs on using it to review corners next season, and over 70 per cent opposed that. Most were against checks for second yellow cards, while a limited challenge system narrowly drew support. More than 80 per cent now prefer watching matches without VAR.
