At just 23, Zion Suzuki is already making a name for himself in European football.
The Japan international made history when he became the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in Serie A with Parma. Now, after joining Aston Villa, he has the chance to take another step forward and make his mark in the Premier League.
Suzuki attracted interest from several major European clubs, with PSG coming close to signing him. Villa eventually won the race, agreeing a deal that could reach €35 million including bonuses.
The goalkeeper was Japan’s starter at the 2026 World Cup, playing all four matches before their last-16 defeat by Brazil. Despite the early exit, Suzuki was one of the more impressive goalkeepers at the tournament.
Suzuki’s story is an interesting one. He was born in the United States to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother, but moved to Japan when he was young. He joined Urawa Reds and, at just 16, became the youngest professional player in the club’s history.
He made his senior debut in 2021 and soon picked up the Japanese League Cup’s New Hero award. Europe came calling in 2023, when he joined Belgian side Sint-Truiden. After making the move permanent, he was sold to Parma a year later for twice the fee the Belgian club had paid.
At Parma, Suzuki became the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in Serie A and quickly showed that he was ready for a higher level.
His progress with Japan has been just as impressive. After representing the country at youth level and the Olympics, he became the senior team’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2023.
Suzuki has also had to deal with racism and abuse because of his mixed heritage. Rather than allowing it to hold him back, he has consistently spoken about responding on the pitch.
Now, with Aston Villa, Suzuki has another opportunity to prove himself. At 23, he still has plenty of room to improve, but his rise so far suggests he could be one to watch in the Premier League.
