Oli McBurnie has been one of the most sought-after players in the Championship this summer, and Swansea now lead the chase to bring him back.
Swansea City have now edged ahead of Hull City in the chase to sign former Sheffield United and Swans striker Oli McBurnie, but Ipswich Town could yet complicate matters as they too are in the mix for his signature.
Swansea are now leading the charge to bring Oli McBurnie back to the Championship following the former Sheffield United striker's season in Spain with Las Palmas.
The Swans ended last season in 11th place in the Championship table. They are rebuilding ahead of the new campaign, and are reportedly keen to bring the striker back to the club with whom he played between 2015 and 2019.
McBurnie had also been in negotiations with Hull City, but with Hull being in a seemingly precarious position when it comes to their financial situation, that is proving to be a potential stumbling block that the Tigers may not be able to get past.
Journalist Alan Nixon reports that Swansea have edged ahead of Hull City and Ipswich Town in the chase for McBurnie.
Hull's transfer embargo - which doesn't restrict them from signing free agents such as McBurnie - means that they may not be able to offer him the length and size of contract that he wants.
The 29-year-old striker is reported to be discussing a three-year deal with the Swans, but Nixon reports that this is something that Hull may not be able to offer because of the financial situation that they find themselves in.
Hull owner, Acun Ilicali, has previously said that the club are to appeal this embargo, but until such a time that the appeal is heard, it remains in place.
Nixon reports that both Swansea and Hull have been involved in talks with the player, but also adds that Ipswich Town are making a late attempt to win his signature, who haven't yet replaced Liam Delap after the striker left for Portman Road for Chelsea at the very start of the summer.
McBurnie originally signed for Swansea City from Bradford City in 2015, and spent four years with the Swans.
This was punctuated by loan spells with Newport County, Bristol Rovers and Barnsley respectively, before moving to Sheffield United for £17 million in 2019.
McBurnie was a semi-success for the Blades, and scored 13 goals for them in their 2022-23 Championship promotion-winning team before leaving the club in 2024, upon the expiry of his contract, to play in Spain with Las Palmas.
Their relegation at the end of the 2024-25 season resulted in him leaving due to a release clause in his contract, despite still having two years to run on his contract.
McBurnie remains highly thought of in South Wales, and a return to Swansea would be a homecoming of sorts, but the potential interest of Ipswich Town could yet mean that there's still a twist to come in a transfer saga that has been running the entire length of the summer break.
