Switzerland top group as Canada advance, Bosnia wait and Qatar head home | OneFootball

Group B is settled, Switzerland top, Canada through, Bosnia wait as a likely third and Qatar are out. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, it is the first group to be decided, with round of 32 opponents to be confirmed in the coming days.

Switzerland secured first place by winning in Vancouver despite the home crowd, beating Canada 2-1. Bosnia defeated Julen Lopetegui's Qatar 3-1 in Seattle to take third with four points.

Sevilla forward Rubén Vargas set the Swiss on their way from a Johan Manzambi pass. The 20-year-old Freiburg attacker then struck the second, his third of this World Cup.

Canada had arrived buoyed after putting six past Qatar, and goal difference ultimately saw them advance as runners-up. Promise David pulled one back and they chased a leveller that would have taken top spot, but it never came.

Switzerland's back line, led by Manuel Akanji, formerly of Manchester City, and Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel were kept busy as Canada pressed.

It is Canada's first progression beyond the opening round after three World Cup participations. Switzerland also ended a long wait, moving through a group stage for the first time since Germany 2006.

Bosnia managed Qatar with few alarms, and Edin Dzeko, still competing at 40, departed irritated after being substituted having almost scored. They now wait on other groups to see if they advance. Lopetegui leaves his first World Cup with one point.
