Final last-16 tie decided by spot-kicks
Switzerland have knocked Colombia out of the World Cup after a cagey last-16 tie was decided by a penalty shootout. It was a tight, cagey affair in Vancouver as two sides renowned for their defensive prowess locked horns. Chances, unsurprisingly, were few and far between, though both goalkeepers came up with a string of important saves to keep their sides in contention. Both Gregor Kobel and Camilo Vargas made key stops in an even cagier period of extra-time, which ensured the match would be decided by spot-kicks.
Davinson Sanchez put in a strong defensive performance but was one of two Colombians to miss in the shootout, with Juan Hernandez sharing that burden as Murat Yakin’s side reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1952. Manuel Akanji also missed badly, ballooning his penalty over the crossbar, but his blushes were spared.
Switzerland will now head to Kansas City to face Argentina for a place in the World Cup semi-finals. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis.
