Former Chelsea defender Tariq Lamptey embarked on an adventure in Serie A last summer, joining Fiorentina on a permanent deal from Brighton. Things didn’t go to plan and they could now be getting worse.

La Viola paid €6 million to sign him but have seen him sidelines for over six months due to a serious knee injury. Fitness worries had been plaguing the full-back for many seasons and this hasn’t quite changed even in Italy.

The timeline for Lamptey’s return to action is unknown but Fiorentina are about to terminate his contract. The termination is about to be signed, with the former Brighton player having featured for just one Serie A game.

While harsh, the decision could help Fiorentina financially. The Ghana international earns €44k per week, which isn’t minor by any means. His physical worries mean that breaking into the first-team in FLorence is next to impossible.

Fiorentina would be far better signing a full-back who is fitter and also potentially younger. Niccolo Fortini has done well this season and this shows a replacement might already be at home for Paolo Vanoli’s side.
