Atlético de Madrid and Telefónica will launch a pioneering smart-signage system at the Metropolitano, giving supporters instant, on-phone guidance in 41 languages and further cementing the venue’s status as a leading smart stadium.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, more than 100 next generation QR codes will be positioned across the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, readable at long range and even while walking, removing the need to stop, point or focus.
The system, developed by Spanish start-up Navilens, links the stadium directly with fans from arrival and is designed to cut uncertainty, with long-distance detection that guarantees full autonomy for visually impaired supporters and for visitors from abroad.
The QR markers act as instant audio guides at key points such as entrances, toilets and the club museum’s digital experiences. Museum-goers can access autonomous, multilingual information on trophies and shirts. The rollout is scheduled across the coming season.
Navilens was chosen as the winner of the first Atleti Lab Open Connect powered by Telefónica, an open-innovation contest focused on sustainability, accessibility and inclusion.
Telefónica’s partnership with Atlético began in 2017, helping create a 100% digital venue connecting more than 68,000 spectators across 88,000 square metres through extensive fibre, Wi-Fi and low-latency 5G.
The control room synchronises over 1,000 LED screens and manages 500 access doors and 160 security cameras, while last season saw a 360-degree roof display installed, an oval of over 400 metres and about 2,000 square metres.
