The 2026 World Cup knockout stage has already produced a remarkable statistical milestone, with two dramatic penalty shootouts making tournament history on the same day.

Germany's Round of 32 defeat to Paraguay and Morocco's victory over the Netherlands both required spot-kicks after 1-1 draws, and each shootout featured five missed penalties - equalling the highest total ever recorded in a World Cup shootout.

In the Germany-Paraguay encounter, Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade, Antonio Sanabria, Jonathan Tah and Fabián Balbuena all failed from 12 yards before José Canale eventually converted the winning penalty for Paraguay.

Just hours later, history repeated itself in Monterrey. The Netherlands and Morocco also combined for five missed spot-kicks before Ismael Saibari held his nerve to send the Atlas Lions into the last 16.

According to our records, it is the first time in World Cup history that two penalty shootouts featuring five misses have occurred on the same day. The combined total of 10 unsuccessful penalties also sets a new record for the most missed spot-kicks in a single day at the tournament.

With 27 matches still remaining in the 2026 World Cup, there is every chance more records could be broken before the competition reaches its conclusion, but the knockout stage has already delivered an unforgettable chapter in tournament history.
