Independiente Medellín are in turmoil ahead of Thursday’s Libertadores 2026 meeting with Flamengo, after principal shareholder Raúl Giraldo argued with supporters following Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Rionegro Águilas, Globo.com reports.
The defeat at the Atanasio Girardot eliminated Medellín from the Colombian championship. The same venue will host the tie against Flamengo.
After the final whistle Giraldo went onto the pitch, then left alongside the players and gestured towards the stands. El Tiempo reported that he raised his arms as if celebrating a win.
Supporters condemned the behaviour and tensions escalated, with calls for him to leave the club. Protests were staged within areas inside the Atanasio Girardot.
Flamengo top Group A with seven points and visit Medellín on Thursday at 21:30. Independiente Medellín are third on four points. Flamengo won the first meeting 4-1 at the Maracanã.
