The World Cup itself is not the only honour which is up for grabs this summer.

There will be plenty of interest in seeing who takes home the Golden Boot for the tournament's top goalscorer.

Who are the top contenders for the prize? Let's take a closer look...

Lionel Messi

He may turn 39 during the tournament but that hasn't prevented one of the all-time greats being included among the favourites to pick up one of the few individual awards that he has yet to win.

Some favourable group stage opposition and a lengthy potential run thereafter could well see Argentina's talisman rack up the goals and propel himself into contention.

Even if he doesn't manage to take home the Golden Boot, keep a very close eye on his goalscoring exploits in any case.

Currently on 13 World Cup goals, he needs three to equal Miroslav Klose's all-time record and four to become the record goalscorer on his own.

Erling Haaland

Few men at this tournament know the way to the back of the net like the Norway striker, who will also relish the opportunity to compete on world football's biggest stage for the first time.

Armed with a ridiculous record of 55 goals in just 49 caps and coming off the back of a 38-goal season with Manchester City, he is certain to score this summer and the only question is how many.

In qualifying alone, he scored a jaw-dropping 16 goals in eight games!

Perhaps the only thing that could stand in his way and Norway being unable to mount a deep run in the tournament, meaning he may have to do his scoring early and often.

Mikel Oyarzabal

One of the few apparent 'weaknesses' of the Spain squad is the lack of an out-and-out No. 9 this summer and the man who will get the nod in that central role is Oyarzabal.

He has an outrageous knack for scoring in major finals but has also added a goalscoring consistency to his game too, particularly for his country.

In 52 caps, the Real Sociedad star has scored 24 goals and managed an impressive six in qualification.

With plenty of supply coming from the likes of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, he'll get his chances. Can he take them?

Harry Kane

No player has ever won multiple World Cup Golden Boots and the England captain is in with a big chance of doing that this summer, adding to his 2018 win.

He is the focal point for everything in an attacking sense for his side and with England also favoured for a deep run, it should allow him plenty of opportunities to rack up the goals.

Another outrageous scoring season with Bayern Munich sees Kane arrive in the competition having netted over 60 goals at club level.

Kylian Mbappé

Few players come alive at the World Cup like Mbappé.

Like Messi, he is also aiming to eclipse Klose's all-time scoring record and is just four goals off the German (at the age of 27!). Like Kane, he is also aiming to become the only man ever to win more than one Golden Boot.

No player has scored more goals in the final of the competition too than the Real Madrid superstar, who top scored in Qatar last time with eight goals.

He's favourite to make it successive Golden Boot wins. Will he justify that faith?
