Welcome to today’s exclusive & comprehensive round-up of all things Bayern Munich from Bayern insider Christian Falk. Featuring updates on Jose Mourinho, Michael Olise, Lewis Hall, and Yann Bisseck.
The DFB Pokal was a very important trophy because if Bayern had lost this season, then we’d be talking about a regular season instead of a very good one. One title would not have been enough for Bayern Munich. When they were carving the club’s name onto the trophy after the 3-0 win over VFB Stuttgart, I wasn’t sure whether they should write Bayern Munich or Harry Kane’s name! It was very impressive to see him after the match, speaking about how it was one of the greatest nights of his career. So, you see how important this title was for him, and it’s another to add to his growing collection! At the end of his career, when he’s signing autographs, he can mention a lot of trophies, hopefully. It’s very important for him.

It was quite funny talking to Kane after the match, as he told us it was great to win the trophy, but that we shouldn’t forget the next one isn’t for Germany – it’s for England!
❌ It is NOT TRUE: Jose Mourinho was at the Olympiastadion to watch Michael Olise for Real Madrid. There was a really big rumour around, as everyone was thinking, “What is Mourinho doing there?” Indeed, he was not there on his own, nor was he there at the request of Bayern Munich. The Portuguese head coach was invited by VfB Stuttgart! The board member for sport, Fabian Wohlgemuth, has a close connection with Gestifute, Mourinho’s agency, and wanted to invite the Real Madrid coach to meet him and, perhaps, have talks about a few players from Stuttgart. Angelo Stiller, it’s worth noting, is still on the radar at Real Madrid. Perhaps he’s one reason. It was nice, of course, for Mourinho that he could see Michael Olise in Bayern’s fabulous red jersey. But in the end, Uli Hoeneß, the godfather of Bayern Munich, made it clear that Mourinho can come five times again to see the Frenchman play, but he won’t sign him!
Bayern lost the race for Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona. Bayern had an agreement with Gordon for several weeks, but Barcelona also secured an agreement of their own in the last week, and they have an agreement with Newcastle, and that was the problem for Bayern Munich. Max Eberl wasn’t allowed to make a bid of over €60m – that was the budget from the supervisory board. So, for Bayern, it’s okay that they didn’t sign Gordon, as they wouldn’t have paid the price Barcelona did. Bayern now have to find another solution. I heard it will be a younger player – not a star like Anthony Gordon. It could be a player like Mika Godts at Ajax, so Bayern have to discuss now. They’ve already had talks while they were talking to Anthony Gordon with other players. I think it will be a cheaper, younger solution as backup to Luis Diaz and Harry Kane.
✅ It is TRUE: There are growing concerns over Max Eberl’s future at Bayern Munich. There was a bit of friendly fire that took place ahead of the DFB Pokal final with Uli Hoeneß’s “60-40” comments on Eberl’s future. It’s not good for Max Eberl to see that on the day of the final. I guess Hoeneß knew when the interview was published what his words would mean. So, I think it’s the first step of the demontage of Max Eberl. From the outside, supporters will be thinking, “Well, we won the double. Almost won the treble. He brought in Vincent Kompany, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, Tom Bischof for free, Jonas Urbig for free”. Don’t forget Urbig was in the Bundesliga 2 as a second goalkeeper. So there are plenty of good decisions there.
But now they have to think about what this means for the future of the role. If they don’t give him a new contract, Eberl only has one year left on his current deal. But I can’t imagine that if they opt not to extend his contract, he’ll still be here next season. When we asked the 52-year-old whether this meant he’d be a lame duck, and he found it hard to answer. He told us that he couldn’t just do his job, and he couldn’t decide for the supervisory board. Max wants to stay; he won’t quit. He’ll try his best. Now, he has to wait. But, if you ask me, when Uli Hoeneß said they were unsure about Eberl’s new contract and that it was “60-40” in Eberl’s favour – I think it’s more like 40-60 against the director of sport.
✅ It is TRUE: Yann Bisseck is an option on Bayern’s transfer shortlist for the summer window. I heard that Bayern Munich have a close connection to Inter Milan. So, they’ve asked what a potential fee would look like and how much he’d cost. Inter are looking for about €40m [£34.6m]. Bayern are searching, but they aren’t hellbent on trying to get a deal right now, as they have to sell a defender before bringing in a centre-back. It’s still Min-jae Kim that FC Bayern are thinking of selling. They’re looking for €30m [£25.9m]. So, you see, there’s a small gap to Bisseck. The German is a very good player and is normally in the national side. He’s not at the World Cup only because it was a really close race with Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw. Thiaw made it and, as you can imagine, Yann Bisseck was really disappointed, given he’d also secured the double with Inter (winning the Serie A a second time and the cup). It’s really hard for him to stay at home. He’s a really interesting player for Bayern, but only if they can sell someone.
To be honest, Lewis Hall’s name is not one I’ve heard yet in connection with Bayern Munich. What I can say is that it’s true Bayern Munich are searching for left-backs. As I’ve mentioned already with Bisseck, however, it’s dependent on the club selling a player – in this case, it would be Hiroki Ito. The Japanese defender has a price tag of €20m [£17.3m]. FC Bayern are still hoping to get a really huge offer from Saudi Arabia for Alphonso Davies. Then they’d have to think about that as well! But if they can’t sell Davies or Ito, they won’t be bringing in another player, which would mean bad news for Lewis Hall, and the same for Joško Gvardiol (who can play at left-back and centre-back). I think Bayern are testing the market to see if they can make something happen, but they have to sell a defender first.
✅ It is TRUE: Konrad Laimer’s talks with Bayern are moving in a positive direction. I heard there’s been another meeting. Laimer wants to stay, and you can feel that Bayern want to give him a new contract. I think it’ll work. I don’t know if it’ll happen before the World Cup. There was a very funny scene when the Austrian was interviewed after the cup final, and another player was screaming into the interview, jokingly demanding why Laimer wanted so much money for his new contract! Konrad Laimer was laughing and joked that they should play the World Cup first and then, if Austria wins, perhaps he’d be more expensive! They’re making jokes, which is always a sign that the feeling is good between player and club, and it could happen.

✅ It is TRUE: Liverpool are interested in Kennet Eichhorn and there have already been talks over a transfer. It’s the same situation Manchester City are facing in that he’s not allowed to play in England until he turns 18. But Liverpool want to save the player, as do City and Bayern Munich, but both Premier League clubs have to give him away on loan for the time being. He can sign a contract when he’s 18. That’s a big question for German clubs, as it’s a gamble, given he’s only 16. Bayern are prepared to bet on Eichhorn and give him a contract.
He’s got a big transfer fee attached (for German clubs, less so for English clubs) of €12m [£10.3m]. But there’s also a signing fee, and the player’s salary demands are not quite small (given the number of offers on the table). Such to the point that even Borussia Dortmund are saying it’s too much for them. And if it’s a problem for Dortmund, you can bet it will be a problem for RB Leipzig. Leipzig can say they’ll give him more playing time, but the idea of Liverpool and City is to loan Eichhorn back to the Bundesliga. This could work well for Bayer Leverkusen, but also for Dortmund or Leipzig. At Bayern Munich, it will be the case that they’ll point to Lennart Karl as a demonstration of the developmental opportunity they can provide a young player. They told him he can get playing time too under a fantastic coach in Vincent Kompany. Bayern has the green light from the supervisory board to go for Kennet Eichhorn. So, in the end, I think it’ll be a race between Bayern, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Good news for Leipzig if a Premier League club wins!
✅ It is TRUE: There have been talks with Premier League clubs to sell Arijon Ibrahimović. Bayern are planning to sell the player to bring in funds. I heard there is some interest in him from Italy. He’s a player Bayern feel they can do a deal for after a solid loan spell with Heidenheim. At the moment, they’re trying to sell him and will welcome Premier League bids.
✅ It is TRUE: The most likely scenario for João Palhinha is that he’ll stay put at Tottenham. We know they’re going to stay in the Premier League. I loved the scenes of the midfielder celebrating so passionately after scoring the pivotal goal against Everton to keep them in the English top-flight on the final day of the season. He was showing so much love to the supporters, so I think it’s clear that he wants to stay. But in the end, I don’t think it’s a question of if he’ll stay at Tottenham, but rather how much Spurs will bid to Bayern Munich. They can make it easy and say we want him so much, we’ll pay the release clause of €30m. That’s the route Bayern are hoping for. But I think Tottenham are going to try to negotiate the price down.
I think Palhinha is too expensive at the moment for Sporting Lisbon. I heard they tried, at first, to get another loan deal. So, I think if Tottenham make a bid of over €20m-25m [£17.3m-21.6m], he’ll stay in London. But, please, Tottenham – think of Bayern Munich! They’re not such a rich club. Go ahead and give them €30m.
It’s really crazy if you think Lothar Matthäus – who I absolutely love – is directly impacting price tags on the transfer market! That’s just not reality. He spoke at the time when Bayern and Newcastle were talking with Stuttgart about Nick Woltemade that the player is an €80m signing. At the time, Bayern were only prepared to pay €55m, which wasn’t enough for Stuttgart. However, I don’t think this is the reason why FC Bayern missed out. Could you imagine if Gary Lineker said Erling Haaland was worth €150m, and then everyone acted accordingly with this price in mind?
✅ It is TRUE: The Harry Kane contract talks can now officially begin. I talked to every side, and everyone is saying that the England international was so laser-focused on securing trophies for FC Bayern that he didn’t want to be distracted by any talks ahead of the Pokal final. At the final in Berlin, Harry’s brother was present with his father (both are his agents), and now they can start the talks. I get the vibe that both sides want to make a deal. Herbert Hainer, the club president, already said that Bayern want to hand the striker a new contract. So, now, it’s just a question of how long the contract will be. Are we talking about a year? One year plus another year option? I think the latter is the most likely option, but perhaps Harry Kane might be looking for longer. We have to see what the demands are, but, in the end, I think everyone will make this happen!
Both Harry Kane and Michael Olise have said they don’t want to leave Bayern Munich, and I can confirm this is true. Both players want to win the Champions League with the German champions. Both were on PSG’s transfer list – PSG’s interest in Kane was an exclusive story we confirmed. We know he already said no, and the same goes for Olise. The Frenchman will stay one more year for certain, perhaps even two. After that, we’ll have to wait and see if he signs another contract with Bayern Munich. But his next step is more likely to be a club like Real Madrid, or perhaps even a return to the Premier League. But not at the moment to Paris.
I love this story so much. Mehmet Scholl, the Bayern Munich legend, is very keen on music. For those who maybe aren’t as aware in England, the German is well-known for making mix-tapes (Vor dem Spiel ist nach dem Spiel, Mehmet Scholl kompiliert, Vol.2) of bands he loves after his playing career ended. He really wanted to add an Oasis song to his compilation, but he couldn’t make it happen at first, as Oasis’ management always refused to give up the rights to samplers.
Then he met a German journalist and told him the story, and that journalist mentioned that he was meeting Noel Gallagher that night for an interview in London, and kindly offered to ask on Scholl’s behalf. And he did! He mentioned Mehmet Scholl’s name, and Gallagher recalled he was the same player who scored against Manchester United when they were knocked out of the Champions League semi-final in 2001. The rock legend told the journalist that anyone who scores against United will get any Oasis song he wants. And so, it was like that – The Masterplan was published on an album from Mehmet Scholl.
