Gus Hamer's bizarre gift for a Coventry City kit man has been revealed, as he's linked with a return to the Sky Blues from Sheffield United.

The future of Gustavo Hamer continues to dominate the news outlets ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season being set to get underway.

The Dutchman is still contracted with Sheffield United, but it seems as though his days at Bramall Lane are numbered, which could see interested parties register their interest in landing his signature before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.

It's been revealed by Sky Sports that Coventry City were closing in on a sensational return for Hamer, who was a popular player with the Sky Blues supporters in his time with the club.

Hamer made 132 appearances in total for Coventry City across a three-year spell with the club, which had plenty of memorable memories whilst with them.

Most notably, Hamer scored the winner against Middlesbrough in their Championship play-off semi-final, before going on to score the equaliser against Luton Town in the final, before they were narrowly beaten by the Hatters on penalties.

Hamer was fondly remembered for his impact with Coventry City, and he's certainly been held in high regard by the club's staff members as well.

Coventry City kit man Chris Marsh revealed in an interview with Sky Sports that Hamer was close with him after he looked after him when he first signed for Coventry, and stated that the midfielder had a superstition of giving him his Rolex watch to look after for each game that he featured in for the Sky Blues.

"When he first came over, he stopped with me for three months. He had just moved into his new house, and he had always wanted this big American style fridge, so I went to go and get it for him. I had the club van, I had to barter for it, and take it round his house.

"My wife looked at this fridge and said 'that fridge is the business, I want that, it's brilliant'. Gus being the kind gentleman that he is said, 'if I ever move from here (Coventry) or move house, you can have that fridge.

"Fast forward, and a week after he plays his first game for Coventry, he goes, 'can you look after my Rolex watch', He plays the game, and has a man-of-the-match performance. So, that superstition, I always had to have his Rolex watch."

Marsh went on to admit that he had slight hopes of being gifted the Rolex watch when Hamer announced he was leaving Coventry to join Sheffield United.

However, he was presented with the American-style fridge instead, which Marsh was still more than happy to take on for his family into his own home.

"He comes in one day and says, 'I'm off to Sheffield United', and I said, 'you know, remember the past', and he said, 'I know, come round my house tonight and there's a gift'.

"I'm thinking he's going to give me the Rolex watch. We get there and he opens the door and says, 'I told you I would look after you. There it is, the fridge.'

"He's given me the fridge, which was lovely of him, so instead of a Rolex, I got a fridge."

Only time will tell as to where Coventry City are in negotiations to sign Hamer for a second time, and the midfielder will be eager to have his future resolved at the earliest of opportunities.

Coventry take on Arsenal in their first match in the Premier League this season, whilst Hamer's Sheffield United take on Birmingham City in their season opener in the Championship.
