Arsenal’s Max Dowman hit the headlines after scoring in the Premier League at 16, but a Wolves teenager did it long before.

As reported by ExpressAndStar.com, there is a precedent at Molineux. At 16 years and 265 days, Alan Steen made his Wolves debut and scored in a 3-0 win over Manchester United.

With teams then using two wingers, Wolves started two 16-year-olds in those roles, Steen on the right and former England schoolboy international Jimmy Mullen on the left. It was the first time a side had fielded two 16-year-old wingers.

Steen’s parents travelled from Liverpool for the occasion without telling him, aiming to surprise their son after a letter from him hinted he might have news of his own.

A capable sprinter, Steen had been on New Brighton’s books, but the club could not find him work and suggested he try Wolves. His father took him to Molineux in March 1937 when he was not yet 14.
