At the turn of the century, AC Milan were a regular presence in the Champions League from 2002 to 2008. Then, after the 2008/09 UEFA Cup campaign, the Rossoneri returned to Europe's top competition from 2009 to 2014. After a stint away from the competition, the Rossoneri were back to competing consistently in the Champions League from September 2021 to February 2025. Now, after a season without European football, AC Milan will compete in the Europa League. The Rossoneri qualified for the Champions League every year between 2021 and 2025. They were even drawn into a 'group of death' in 2021/22 with Liverpool, Atlético Madrid, and Porto, finishing last with four points before clinching the league title in Italy. In 2022/23, the Rossoneri had their best run of the five years, knocking out Tottenham in the Round of 16 and Napoli in the quarter-finals. 

In the 2023/24 season, AC Milan were once again drawn into another extremely challenging group featuring Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Newcastle. The Rossoneri finished third, on par with PSG in points but behind on head-to-head record, before ending the season in the Europa League. One year on, in the first-ever edition under the new single-league format, AC Milan qualified for the knockout stage through the play-offs, but were then eliminated. In 2026/27, they will compete in the Europa League again. In its current format, the Rossoneri have made several appearances in the competition, reaching the Round of 16 in 2017/18. A year later, they finished third in a group featuring Betis, Olympiacos, and Dudelange. In 2020/21, they went on a long run that began in the play-offs against Shamrock Rovers, Bodø/Glimt, and Rio Ave, and ended in the Round of 16 against Manchester United. AC Milan also qualified for the competition in the 2019/20 season.
