Since rising through the ranks of the Manchester City academy, Oscar Bobb has always seemed destined to one day become a key player at the club. Although he missed the vast majority of the 24/25 season, Bobb’s talent and potential are clear to see. He has shown flashes of that undoubted talent so far this season. Perhaps his best performance of the season came during the first half of Manchester City’s 1-nil win over Brentford at the GTech Community Stadium. Bobb’s first half display showed that he could become a starter in Pep Guardiola’s squad in time.
A recent report indicates that the development of Oscar Bobb may shape Manchester City’s potential summer pursuit of Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise. If Bobb kicks on as a player, Manchester City may not need to sign another winger next summer.
Jack Gaughan was recently asked in a Q&A segment for the Daily Mail if Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise was a genuine transfer target for Manchester City. Gaughan revealed that Olise will not be a January transfer window target for City. That news isn’t a surprise. Furthermore, Gaughan reports that there will likely be a free spot in the City squad this summer if Bernardo Silva leaves the club at the end of this season. Gaughan adds that City have previously flirted with the idea of signing the French international.
But what stands out in Jack Gaughan’s answer to the Olise question is that Oscar Bobb’s development as a player may dictate whether or not City look to sign a winger next summer. If Bobb takes his game to another level, City will likely look to strengthen in other areas of the pitch during the summer transfer window, as per Gaughan’s report.
After barely playing last season, Oscar Bobb has shown that the fractured leg that derailed his 24/25 campaign is now behind him. Watching him play during the early stages of this season, it is clear that his confidence is back in his body and in his ability. That stood out during Manchester City’s 1-nil win over Brentford just over a week ago. The dribbling ability that makes Bobb such a dangerous player stood out, especially during the first half of Manchester City’s win at the GTech Community Stadium.
Looking ahead, Bobb’s first half performance against Brentford is a good launching pad for him to grow as a player this season. If he can play to that standard consistently, and add more goals and assists to his game this season, the Norwegian international could develop into a world-class winger. That is the type of player Manchester City hopes that Oscar Bobb becomes. He has the technical ability and work rate to become a key player at City.
Oscar Bobb’s development this season will likely impact Manchester City’s interest in Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise. As of right now, Bobb isn’t a better player than Olise. He doesn’t have to be. But if Bobb takes a considerable leap as a player this season, Manchester City will not need to sign another winger during the summer transfer window. They’ll be free to focus on improving other areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad in the summer.
