Thomas Tuchel officially began his tenure as England manager at the start of January and has been straight to work.
This weekend he was at Tottenham vs Newcastle, Brighton v Arsenal, Liverpool vs Manchester United and then Wolves v Nottingham Forest on Monday. But which players will have impressed him and which ones not so much?
Anthony Gordon
Gordon scored in the 2-1 win for Newcastle at Tottenham, his fifth league goal of the season, and was a constant threat throughout the game. He has been in red-hot form of late, with seven goal involvements in his last eight games.
And with left-wing being a position with no clear candidate for England, he will be right at the top of the list of players who could make that position their own under Tuchel.
Tino Livramento

Arguably the best player of the game on Saturday, Livramento staked his claim to be the German manager’s right-back for England. He won 100% of his tackles and made eight clearances in his side’s win.
Right-back is another uncertain position for England, with Kyle Walker’s form on the decline this season, Reece James constantly injured and Trent Alexander-Arnold by no means a certain starter. Meaning Livramento, very competent going forward and defensively, is someone for Tuchel to consider.
Dominic Solanke
Any English striker is likely playing for a place on the bench in the national team, what with the world-class quality of Harry Kane. But Solanke is as good as any of the second-choice options and with a goal against Newcastle, his 11th of the season for Spurs, he is showing he has what it takes to be an important player under Tuchel.
Cole Palmer

Palmer will have no doubt impressed Tuchel for months from afar, but now that the German is in the job he must be relishing the prospect of coaching the 22-year-old. Palmer scored again this weekend against Crystal Palace for Tuchel’s former side Chelsea.

The PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season got off to a slow start this campaign, but seems to be finding his form at last. With three goal involvements in his last four games, his pick-up in form has directly coincided with Manchester City’s improved results. City boss Pep Guardiola will be pleased to see the 24-year-old back to his best, as will his new national team manager.
Ethan Nwaneri

Nwaneri is still very young and faces stiff competition to make it into the England squad, but there is no doubt he will have impressed Tuchel. His goal against Brighton on Saturday means he is the first ever Arsenal player to score more than one Premier League goal before turning 18.
Liam Delap

Delap has had a fantastic debut season in the Premier League, notching eight goals in 18 starts. At 21-years-old, he could be the perfect long-term replacement for Harry Kane. He scored in the 2-2 draw with Fulham on Sunday and while he has plenty of competition from the likes of Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke, Delap deserves consideration.
Morgan Gibbs-White
The Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder broke into the England squad under interim boss Lee Carsley last year and did his chances of keeping his place in the squad no harm with his performance against former club Wolves. He opened the scoring in front of a watching Tuchel in a 3-0 win for his team and was a threat all game long with his ability to lead fast breaks and run with the ball. He has been a massive part of Forest’s surprise success this season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Amid much speculation on his future, Trent Alexander-Arnold put in perhaps his worst performance of the season with the incoming England boss in attendance.
The right-back was caught out of position for both of Man Utd’s goals in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool side and was far from his best going forward, giving the ball away on too many occasions with poor passes. Although he has been in fine form up to this point, Tuchel will not have been impressed by this weekend’s display and will hope it was just a blip.
Ollie Watkins

Watkins did not grasp the opportunity to impress new England boss Tuchel this weekend, as he managed just two shots in 90 minutes at home against Leicester, neither of which threatened the goal. The striker also gave the ball away in his own half with a sloppy pass, leading to the visitors’ goal. Tuchel was not present but will of course be aware of the striker’s performance. He is having a decent season and has scored eight league goals but with competition among English strikers high, he might need to do more.
Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker has drawn much criticism this season and his cameo against West Ham will do little to relieve it. Manchester City have been in atrocious form by their standards, winning just eight of the last 21 games. Interestingly in all of those eight games won, club captain Walker did not start, and the right-back has only won Premier League game that he has started all season. The England international entered the action in the 61st minute, was booked in the 64th minute, and City lost their clean sheet in the 71st minute, when their captain was caught out of position. As Tuchel enters his new role, the German may have to make tough calls on some of England’s most senior players, including Walker.
Jack Grealish
Jack Grealish is another City and England star that has struggled during a tumultuous time for the Blues. Despite missing out on the Euros, some of Grealish’s best performances this season have come in an England shirt, however if he does not pick up his form at club level, then his spot in Tuchel’s set up will not be guaranteed.
The attacker’s last year-and-a-half have been hampered by injury, and he was confined to Pep Guardiola’s bench this weekend with the Catalan indicating that he does not “deserve” to start over his teammates at present. Grealish was awarded just six minutes on the pitch against West Ham, entering the action with his side already leading 4-1. With so much talent available to him, the new boss of the national team will be unlikely to select players that are not performing at club level.
