Amad Diallo's 90th-minute goal secured Côte d'Ivoire a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their World Cup Group E opener, punishing the South Americans for striking the woodwork three times without reward. The substitute came off the bench and found the net with a left-footed finish after Wilfried Singo's assist from the right. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Côte d'Ivoire v Ecuador.

Winners

Amad Diallo (Côte d'Ivoire)

Amad Diallo proved the difference-maker in Philadelphia, coming off the bench to score the match-winning goal at 90 minutes. Introduced at 56 minutes for Bazoumana Touré, the winger needed just 34 minutes on the pitch to settle a contest that appeared destined for stalemate.

When Wilfried Singo delivered his cross from the right flank, Diallo was positioned perfectly inside the box to meet it. His left-footed finish into the corner gave goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez no chance and broke Ecuador's resistance at the worst possible moment for Sebastián Beccacece's side.

The goal kept Côte d'Ivoire's pursuit of a first-ever World Cup knockout-round appearance on track after opening fixtures. Diallo remained dangerous after scoring, forcing another save from Galíndez at 90+5 minutes. His talent and directness provided exactly what the African champions needed to unlock a stubborn defence.

Wilfried Singo (Côte d'Ivoire)

Wilfried Singo delivered the decisive moment of the match with his attacking run and assist at 90 minutes. Operating from the right of defence, he burst forward when his team needed a breakthrough most, driving past defenders before picking out Amad Diallo with the cross that produced the winning goal.

The defender showed attacking intent throughout the contest, earlier attempting a spectacular bicycle kick inside the Ecuador box at 45+3 minutes that sailed over the bar. His willingness to push forward and involvement in the final third created problems that Ecuador's backline struggled to contain in the closing stages.

Neither team's designated attackers could break the deadlock across 89 goalless minutes, making Singo's intervention from defence all the more significant. His run down the right flank caught Ecuador unprepared, and his delivery found Diallo in position to finish. A match-winning contribution from an unexpected source.

Loser

John Yeboah (Ecuador)

John Yeboah personified Ecuador's wastefulness in front of goal, missing multiple clear chances that could have changed the outcome. His left-footed shot flew over the bar at 14 minutes from a promising position, setting the tone for a frustrating evening that ended with his substitution at 62 minutes.

The clearest opportunity came at 24 minutes when Yeboah struck the post from outside the box with a strike that deserved better fortune. Moments later, teammate Alan Minda also hit the woodwork as Ecuador's profligacy became a recurring theme. These were opportunities that could not be missed against quality opposition.

Ecuador's failure to convert their first-half dominance into goals proved terminal when Amad Diallo punished them late. Yeboah's departure at 62 minutes came with his team still level but having squandered their best openings. Better finishing from the forward could have secured the points Ecuador's performance warranted.
