The greatest Premier League goals everyone forgets

Brilliant Premier League goals are often buried by bigger storylines. Dominik Szoboszlai’s free kick for Liverpool against Manchester City on Sunday was a case in point, eclipsed by the comeback and the controversy.

According to NY Times, that prompted a trawl for great strikes time has sidelined. Matt Phillips’ 40-yard consolation for QPR at Crystal Palace in March 2015 illuminated a season that ended bottom.

Antonio Rudiger scored from over 30 yards for Chelsea against Brentford in April 2022, dipping and swerving in off the post past David Raya. Brentford levelled two minutes later then won 4-1, their first victory over Chelsea since 1939.

Crystal Palace’s 1997-98 still produced Dean Gordon’s thunderbolt at Bolton. After conceding early, the left-back drove a first-time shot from outside the box into the far top corner, and Marcus Bent soon added another from distance.

Dejan Kulusevski’s delicate 77th-minute dink at Everton in January 2025 deserved better. Spurs, amid injuries that forced a back three of Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin and midfielder Archie Gray, trailed 3-0 at half-time and ended with 22 defeats and 17th place.

Before his famous Manchester United volley against Aston Villa, Robin van Persie had already perfected the art at Arsenal. Alex Song supplied near-identikit volleys against Everton and at Liverpool in 2011-12, and Cesc Fabregas set up another versus Wigan in 2011.
