For Manchester City to be successful during the 25/26 season, they will need their entire squad to contribute. Whether that’s their star players, such as Erling Haaland or squad members like Rico Lewis or Matheus Nunes. Every player has to do a job for Pep Guardiola’s side to be successful this season. In the case of Matheus Nunes, he has been in superb form at right-back recently. If he can continue his strong recent form, he’ll be a valuable member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Heading into Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, Pep Guardiola has revealed that Matheus Nunes can become a top-quality right-back. Based on the recent form of Nunes, Pep Guardiola’s assertion is correct, as Matheus Nunes has taken his play up a level recently.
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Aston Villa, Pep Guardiola revealed that he believes Matheus Nunes has the necessary attributes to become a top-quality right-back. The Manchester City manager said that Nunes needs to keep playing at right-back as his physical attributes are suited to playing the position. He explained: “He can be an incredible right-back. Matheus is a holding midfielder with incredible physicality, and as much as he is focused, he can become one of the best [right-backs].”
“It’s a question of him now, as we talk a lot about that. It’s just change your mind and feel that [you can be there]. He has special attributes to play in the sides, and in the last two or three games he has played unbelievable.”

Heading into the 25/26 season, right-back did appear to be a position of concern for Manchester City. It did seem that Pep Guardiola’s squad was a right-back short when the summer transfer window closed. Abdukodir Khusanov’s impressive displays at right-back in September put those concerns to bed. He seems destined to be City’s first-choice right-back when fully fit. Ever since Abdukodir Khusanov got injured, Matheus Nunes has seized his opportunity to start at right-back. During his recent starts, Nunes has improved considerably.
Matheus Nunes adds a dynamic option to Manchester City’s attacking play. His ability to provide overlapping runs from right-back is important to City’s play. He also links the play well, and his combination play with Oscar Bobb, Savinho, Tijjani Reijnders and Phil Foden has impressed recently. Defensively, Matheus Nunes has come on in leaps and bounds. He has held his own against a variety of wingers and he has cut out the defensive errors that can prove so costly for his team. All told, Matheus Nunes has grown considerably as a City player recently.
Matheus Nunes has been in superb form recently. He has grown as a player and if that growth continues he can become a quality right-back as Pep Guardiola pointed out yesterday.
