Chelsea’s season is falling apart, and there’s already talk about another major rebuild this summer.

The Blues are all over the place right now, and Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United saw their Champions League hopes take another huge blow. Manager Liam Rosenior came out after the game and bemoaned the fact that United had had just one shot on target, while his team had dominated the ball and the shots but hadn’t found the net.

Sky Sports’ data team took a look a that claim. Was it just bad luck that the Blues hadn’t scored? One crazy stat found that, since we last scored a Premier League goal (against Aston Villa in mid-March), we’ve had the most shots in the league. 67, without finding the net. At the other end of the table are Nottingham Forest, who have 8 goals from 44 shots since then.

What that shows is that shots and chances under Rosenior are of a “lower quality” – it’s not just bad luck, there’s a tactical element to this too.

The Man U game is a great example – our opposition may have only had one shot, but it was the highest xG chance of the game.
