Liverpool got off to a flying start to the new season, winning their first five Premier League games.

But that start has since been halted by two straight league defeats, with the latest EPL odds showing they are no longer favourites for the title.

While five wins in a row to start a Premier League campaign is impressive, it is far from the best winning start to a season. Here are the clubs who have had the longest winning runs to start a Premier League season and how they fared come the end of the campaign…

Chelsea – 2005/06, nine wins

The Blues won a whopping nine games in a row to start the season under boss Jose Mourinho in the 2005/06 season.

Mourinho’s side beat Wigan, Arsenal, West Brom, Tottenham, Sunderland, Charlton, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Bolton, before dropping points for the first time of the season in a draw with Everton.

They would go on to win the Premier League with 91 points that season, eight points ahead of closest rivals Manchester United.

Liverpool – 2019/20, eight wins

Liverpool do feature among the best Premier League starts already, however, with Jurgen Klopp leading his team to eight wins in a row to start the 2019/20 campaign, beating Norwich, Southampton, Arsenal, Burnley, Newcastle, Chelsea, Sheffield United and Leicester.

That was followed by a draw with Manchester United, before they then went on another winning run, this one totalling an outstanding 18 games as they cruised to the title with 99 points.

Newcastle United – 1994/95, six wins

Despite beating Leicester, Coventry, Southampton, West Ham, Chelsea and Arsenal to start the season, the Magpies dropped off considerably later in the campaign and ended up finishing in sixth position.

Kevin Keegan’s side would run Manchester United close to the title the following season, however, but endured a disappointing campaign prior given their start.

Manchester City – 2016/17, six wins

It is perhaps surprising that Manchester City do not rank nearer the top of this list given their recent Premier League success, but they did start the 2016/17 season with victories against Sunderland, Stoke, West Ham, Manchester United, Bournemouth and Swansea.

While it appeared Pep Guardiola might win the Premier League in his first season in charge, it proved not to be that way as they would end up finishing third.

Liverpool – 2018/19, six wins

Their eight wins in a row in the 2019/20 season was not the only superb start they had to a Premier League season under Klopp. His team beat West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Leicester, Spurs and Southampton, but despite not losing until the new year, they missed out on the Premier League title by a point to Man City.

City also started the 2023/24 campaign with six wins, beating Burnley, Newcastle, Sheffield United, Fulham, West Ham and Nottingham Forest. They also won the title that season, beating Arsenal by two points.
