Marc Cucurella has revealed how Chelsea targeted Liverpool’s right hand side and the advanced position of Mohammed Salah.
Chelsea recorded a well deserved 2-1 win against the defending champions as Cucurella set up Estevao for a last minute winner.
Moises Caicedo had given Chelsea the lead with a brilliant strike into the top corner, before Cody Gakpo equalised in the second half, but Estevao’s late goal was enough to give the Blues a first league win since August.
Chelsea in desperate need of three points fielded a three man midfield with Enzo Fernandez taking up an advanced position with Malo Gusto surprisingly alongside Moises Caicedo.
The Blues started well and took the game to Liverpool, and took a deserved lead through Caicedo, with the only disappointment in the first half not scoring more goals.
Cucurella set up Chelsea’s winning goal against Liverpool.
Even though Liverpool equalised Chelsea still looked in the ascendency, and Maresca threw caution to the wind with a triple substitution as he introduced Marc Guiu, Jamie Gittens and Estevao.
Chelsea were rewarded for those changes as the Blues attacked the Liverpool right with Cucurella putting a ball across for Estevao to slide in at the back post.
The Spaniard revealed after the game the Blues had specifically targeted the right hand side, and the advanced position of Salah.
“We tried to attack always because we know that Salah is always ready to attack, to play the counter attack,” he told Sky Sports.
“So we know that, we practice and the manager tells us that the space is maybe there.
“We saw that in the last minute.”
Despite finishing the game with Reece James and Jorrel Hato at centre back, Chelsea remained resolute and defended really well.
