The Manchester Bee has been part of the DNA of our city for almost 200 years and is an iconic symbol for Mancunians.

Built for this City: Manchester City and PUMA unveil the 2026/27 Away Kit

Stylish, striking and a source of great pride, the first official association came when Manchester was granted its coat of arms in 1842, with seven bees placed on a globe above the shield.

The bee – specifically the worker bee – conveys the city’s industry, togetherness and hard work, while the globe reflected Manchester’s importance as a global trading city.

During the Industrial Revolution, Manchester took the lead in terms of mass production leading to comparisons with the worker bee and the hive of activity, with factories filled with hard working individuals that helped make the city into not only a northern powerhouse, but a world industry leader during the 19th century.

The symbolism runs deep.

Manchester was built on the labour and ingenuity of ordinary people - mill workers, engineers, traders, inventors and labourers whose combined efforts transformed the city. The bee symbolised their diligence, cooperation and collective strength.

In many ways, the bee reflects Manchester’s self-image as hard-working, independent, practical, innovative and fiercely proud of its working-class roots.

The Manchester Bee has endured times of hardship, world wars, and tragic events, emerging time and time again when the city needs to pull together as one.

HMS Manchester patrolled the oceans around the UK during the Second World War and was nicknamed the ‘Busy Bee’ with a bee on the ship’s crest and funnel before it was torpedoed in 1942.

Manchester brewery giant Boddingtons adopted the bee symbol in the 1970s, with its barrel and two bees logo becoming as famous the beer itself.

And the University of Manchester proudly has three worker bees on its coat of arms.

Over time, if anything, the bee has become even more prominent around the city.

Manchester City FC, always in touch with the people and history in our own backyard, released an away shirt directly inspired by the Manchester Bee in 2009/10 with a black shirt and yellow shoulder inserts.

That was the Club’s first direct link, but it wouldn’t be the last.

In 2017, following the tragic Manchester Arena attack that claimed the lives of 22 people and injured more than a 1,000 others, it was the Manchester Bee that became the symbol of Mancunians’ determination to pull together in adversity, drawing on the hive mentality of working as one to achieve a way through pain and sorrow.

More than ever, the Manchester Bee represented the heart and soul of the city, with hundreds of thousands of pounds raised as Mancunians in an initiative that saw the bee tattooed onto their arms, legs or wherever in a show of unity that sent the message ‘together we are unbreakable’.

Solidarity, resilience and defiance.

And on 20 July 2017, both Manchester City and Manchester United proudly had the bee included on the match shirts worn during a pre-season friendly in Huston, Texas which were later auctioned to raise money for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

City then made the bee badge available for supporters to have added to our replica shirts during the 2017/18 season.

The badge featured the worker bee on a sky-blue patch, with considerable proceeds again going to the We Love Manchester fund for those affected by the bombing.

For three months in 2018, the Bee in the City exhibition featured 50 individually designed worker bee sculptures, planted around the city, whether inside or outside buildings, and surrounding suburbs.

More lately, Transport for Greater Manchester launched the Bee Network, with its liveries on trams, buses and bikes in the striking yellow and black colour of the worker bee.

The Manchester of 2026 is once again a hive, in many ways.

One of the world’s most innovative and progressive cities continues to grow and prosper at breakneck speed, through hard work, the drive of its people and that hive, worker been mentality.

The Manchester Bee has never been more relevant or prominent and is the perfect representation of a proud city with an incredible backstory and an unbreakable spirit.

Many cities have official symbols, but few have one that people embrace quite as wholeheartedly as Manchester has embraced the bee.

Visit Manchester says: “Manchester claimed the bee because she is an industrious little grafter, individually insignificant but collectively a superorganism. Together we are stronger.”
