The Owls’ chances of a top-six finish took a big blow when they travelled to Turf Moor, suffering a heavy defeat to Scott Parker’s side.

Marcus Edwards gave the Clarets the lead right before halftime, with three more goals coming from Josh Brownhill, Connor Roberts and Manuel Benson in the second 45.

Sheffield Wednesday have now won just one of their last five league games, hurting their chances of a play-off place with just 12 fixtures remaining.

Danny Rohl issues long-term Sheffield Wednesday demand

Rohl has made it clear that he feels there is still more work to be done for Sheffield Wednesday to be able to compete against the likes of Burnley.

He believes recent defeats to Burnley and Leeds United have highlighted the gap between them and the top, indicating more long-term planning is needed at the club.

“It’s important to understand the expectation we’re demanding is quite high and we push, we push and it’s 16 months to see a clear picture of how we want to play,” said Rohl, via Football Heaven on Twitter.

“We’ve seen the development of the team, but now we speak about the top four teams, the top six teams and there’s a big, big difference.

“We have to work on it.

“I’m convinced if we look long-term and we make the right decisions, we have to make the next step to come to the next point.

“But, it means not that I don’t believe in my group.

“As I said before, this underdog position, we have to come through now the games next week and I want to see a real jump in my team and to be again strong.

“Of course, this is what I want to do, I want to win such a big game like this.”

Sheffield Wednesday are now at risk of falling out of the top half of the Championship table, depending on the results elsewhere in this weekend’s round of action.

Danny Rohl’s high standards are evident

Rohl’s impact on Sheffield Wednesday has been tremendous, and his high standards will give fans the confidence that this journey is still only at the beginning.

To get this squad competing for a top-six place at all is quite impressive, but the 4-0 loss to Burnley does highlight the work still needed to actually get to the play-offs.

He has earned the right to be backed properly by Dejphon Chansiri in the summer, after difficulty behind the scenes between the pair in the past.

The Owls are also not out of top-six contention, so if they can respond well to this defeat in the next few weeks then they could still earn a very strong league finish this year.
