Real Madrid may have found balance and structure under Xabi Alonso, but one unresolved issue continues to stir discussion.

The question: Who should take the penalties?

Since Alonso’s arrival, Los Blancos have looked far more organised and composed compared to the inconsistencies seen under Carlo Ancelotti during the 2024/25 campaign.

Every player now seems to understand their role, and the tactical setup is clear.

Yet, amid all the improvements, the hierarchy of penalty takers remains unsettled.

Who to blame?

The most recent incident came during the 4-0 victory over Valencia, when Vinicius Jr. stepped up to take a penalty.

The Brazilian forward saw his effort saved, an outcome that clearly did not please Alonso, whose reaction on the touchline said it all.

Vinicius had reportedly been granted permission by Kylian Mbappe to take the spot kick.

Mbappe is recognised as the team’s first-choice penalty taker, but the Frenchman is known for allowing others a chance when multiple penalties are awarded in a single match.

It is a system based on mutual respect between the players, but it is not a system Alonso personally approved.

The growing concern

The issue is becoming increasingly relevant as Real Madrid has been awarded six penalties already this season.

Each time, there seems to be uncertainty about who steps up and with recent misses, confidence in front of the spot has begun to waver.

Vinicius’ failed attempt against Valencia was Real Madrid’s second consecutive missed penalty, following Mbappe’s error in El Clasico.

This situation has now raised questions about leadership in decisive moments.

Ultimately, the general consensus is that Mbappe should resume full-time penalty duties.

His record is superior and his composure is unmatched. As things stand, that remains the theory, but unless Alonso lays down the law, the debate will continue to simmer every time the referee points to the spot.
