John Anderson has been talking about Eddie Howe and the new Newcastle United Sporting Director, Ross Wilson.
The Paul Mitchell appointment proving to be an absolutely disastrous move by the then Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales to bring his mate in.
Whilst we will never know exactly all that happened behind the scenes, fair to say that Mitchell wasn’t a perfect match with Eddie Howe.
The former Newcastle United defender declaring; “You just hope Ross Wilson hangs on an awful lot longer than the previous ones did.”
John Anderson adding; “The one person with all the power at St James’ Park is is Eddie Howe, and that’s because he’s gone and won a trophy, something that hasn’t been done in such a long time.”
The thing is, by summer 2024, Eddie Howe had done more than enough already to convince everybody that he was the key person at St James’ Park.
So bringing in someone like Paul Mitchell, that the NUFC Head Coach was widely reported to have had no input at all in the appointment, was a shockingly bad idea.
When the whole idea is that a Sporting Director and Manager/Head Coach need to be pushing in the same direction, be on similar wavelengths, the fact that Eddie Howe already has an excellent relationship with Ross Wilson and that he (Howe) was consulted on who should ideally get the job, then every hope this time that we will see a very productive working relationship.
John Anderson talking to BBC Radio Newcastle about Ross Wilson coming in from Nottingham Forest as the Newcastle United Sporting Director:
“They definitely needed to get somebody in.
“You just hope Ross Wilson hangs on an awful lot longer than the previous ones did.
“We have had two sporting directors who didn’t hang around too long, so they had to get it right this time.
“They had to take their time. They had to choose carefully.
“The one person with all the power at St James’ Park is is Eddie Howe, and that’s because he’s gone and won a trophy, something that hasn’t been done in such a long time.
“I’m not too sure Eddie Howe was on the same wavelength as the two previous incumbents.
“Hopefully, he will be with Ross Wilson.
“I don’t think they want to be finding gems cheaply and then selling them high.
“They want to find gems cheaply and hold on to them.
“They do not want another Alexander Isak situation. It was really messy.
