Boca are in a tight spot in this season’s Copa Libertadores after away defeats to Cruzeiro and Barcelona of Ecuador left them third in Group D.
They had opened with wins over Universidad Católica and Barcelona. According to SuperDepor.com, Boca have six points, behind Católica and Cruzeiro, who drew 1-1 on Wednesday.
The upside is that their final two group games, against Cruzeiro on 19 May and Universidad Católica on 28 May, are at La Bombonera, so they still control top spot.
The ideal route is clear. If Boca beat Cruzeiro and Universidad Católica at home they reach 12 points and finish first regardless of other results, which is what Martínez’s side are targeting.
With one win and one draw, qualification is highly likely. Beating Católica then drawing with Cruzeiro could still leave them second if the Brazilians defeat Barcelona on the final day. If they beat Cruzeiro then draw with Católica, goal difference becomes decisive, a two-goal margin or better over Cruzeiro would make the draw enough.
If Boca take only three points, they finish on nine. In that case they would need Barcelona to beat or draw against whichever of Cruzeiro or Católica they fail to defeat, with goal difference likely pivotal.
