Sunderland’s retained list has crystallised three priorities for Florent Ghisolfi before a Europa League campaign. According to Sunderland Echo, the window will be quieter than last year, yet right wing, left back and defensive midfield need work.
There is a clear winger imbalance. Four left wingers are retained, Simon Adingra, Nilson Angulo, Chemsdine Talbi and Romaine Mundle, while Adingra and Mundle face uncertain futures and at least one is likely to move.
With Bertrand Traoré gone, Jocelin Ta Bi is the only senior right-sided option. He will get a pre-season chance and should benefit from extra fixtures, but is unlikely to start weekly in the Premier League. Talbi, Angulo and Trai Hume can cover.
Régis Le Bris likes to rotate wide players. Traoré had become a regular before AFCON, then two knee injuries curtailed him, and although Sunderland managed, his absence was felt. Extra experience on the right would aid the push to play with two natural wingers.
A parting with Dennis Cirkin looks sensible, as he was unlikely to dislodge Reinildo and needs regular football. Hume can deputise and a permanent deal for Lutsharel Geertruida would help, but a naturally left-footed defender still appears short, with at least eight extra Europa League games looming.
Defensive midfield remains unresolved. Dan Neil’s exit exposed the lack of cover for Granit Xhaka, January recruitment proved difficult and Geertruida backed up. Xhaka excelled, yet a likely 50 or more fixtures demand depth, and while Europa minutes might help, Neil has not been replaced.
