The Top Destinations for Liverpool Wantaway Chiesa

The transfer at Liverpool came together in a hurry for Federico Chiesa last summer. It seemed like a great unexpected opportunity after Juventus had shown him the door since they couldn’t agree to a contract renewal. However, things went as poorly as possible for him in England. He could never get right physically and find consistent minutes under Arne Slot.

He’s itching to come back to Italy, and the meager sum paid by the Reds makes it possible, but the complications lie elsewhere, Corriere della Sera informs. He obtained at Anfield the raise he was looking for from the Bianconeri. His current €7.5M salary is a problem for most sides. The same goes for his ever-precarious fitness. While he’d be a bargain fee-wise, it wouldn’t be a risk-free acquisition. Otherwise, an ambitious team would have already scooped him up. Talent-lacking Italy could surely peak Chiesa, if he’s still there underneath the surface.

Inter

They have zeroed in on Ademola Lookman, and they’ll move on to other options only if Atalanta resist a while longer. La Dea tends to make buyers sweat, but, in the end, their big sales generally go through at the figure they set, or very close to it. The player has made his decision. The ball is in the other Nerazzurri’s court now. If they decided he was too pricey and didn’t seal the deal, it wouldn’t take much for them to reach an agreement with Liverpool. They are one of the few clubs for which his wages wouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle, although they’d try to make them more manageable. He wouldn’t be as exciting as the Orobici star, but he’d complement their other attackers in terms of characteristics too.

Napoli

If the Partenopei, and especially Antonio Conte, really wanted Chiesa, he’d probably be with them by now, especially with their plan to sign Dan Ndoye going pear-shaped. Perhaps they would have picked him over Noa Lang. The matter might be simply economic. They are more stringent on personal terms than most outfits. But there are also tactical reservations. They might prefer a winger with more defensive-minded traits to compete with Matteo Politano and balance out the Dutch newcomer and David Neres, who are aggressive. The Reds outcast had an impeccable work rate earlier in his career, but then, as injuries started to pile up, he progressively became more and more of an offense-first, if not only, player. They might stand pat wide now after missing out on their top target. They could utilize their remaining budget for a fullback and a midfielder instead, Alfredo Pedullà informs.

Roma

The Giallorossi have a gaping hole right where the 27-year-old would fit like a glove. However, as Gian Piero Gasperini said, they are searching for “young and energetic” players. He’s no longer the former, while he has to be in tip-top shape to be the latter. Doing the pre-season preparation with them would have greatly helped him. He was very close to them a couple of times in the past, but the transfer never materialized. There may still be lingering bad blood, but they now have different decision-makers. He’d have to take a pay cut, but the capital club is often a great place to go to get a career back on track.

Atalanta

We’ll see about the destination, but Lookman appears as good as gone already. La Dea has already signed an intriguing replacement like Kamaldeen Sulemana, who has yet to put it all together in the final third, like the Nigerian ace when he first came to Italy. Daniel Maldini and Lazar Samardzic were underutilized last season. While they’ll likely add another weapon, they might not go too crazy with it. Chiesa would have the leading role that he wouldn’t get in many places here. However, his wages are even more of a problem when it comes to the Bergamaschi, which are famously cheap in that regard. They have tried, but he’s not so keen on the destination for now, Sportitalia informs.

Milan

They attempted in the past, and they’d have the economic firepower to get it done if they wanted to. However, they don’t play in the cups, they have two studs in his position, and Alexis Saelemaekers is back in town. Plus, they’d have to sell Samuel Chukwueze and Noah Okafor, who have looked half-decent in the pre-season, preferably without taking a bath before purchasing. He might be elsewhere by the time they have made room. It wouldn’t be an ideal spot for Chiesa either. While he’d face less competition than at Liverpool, he’d have to fight for minutes. Unless Massimiliano Allegri somehow manages to turn Rafael Leao into a proper no.9, but that’s a stretch.

Juventus

He’s one of the few players who didn’t go scorched-earth after leaving the Old Lady. The root of the issue was contract-related. They were curt, but they were also right in not giving him a raise, as he’d done little to earn it, and in doing what they could to avoid losing for free. They have a new management and a new coach now. The past issues and tension could be water under the bridge. Damien Comolli made it clear in an interview that they wouldn’t sign a new attacker until Nicolas Gonzalez is on the roster. Since there’s not much traction concerning his sale, it remains to be seen whether Jadon Sancho will still be available once it happens. If not, they’ll have to find a new target that combines quality with an affordable cost. They certainly can’t rely on just Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceiçao all season long, as good as they are. Perhaps he’d accept more manageable conditions after being humbled. He’d be an interesting fit in Igor Tudor’s up-tempo system.
