Pep Guardiola says he’s seeing signs that his Manchester City team are in good shape in the early stages of the new season.
We started the campaign with a thumping victory at Wolves before a 2-0 home defeat to Spurs last weekend.
Now we head to Brighton for a 14:00 (UK) kick-off on Sunday before the first international break of the season.
While results have been mixed so far, Guardiola is pleased with what he’s seen from his team.
Asked in Friday’s press conference what has given him that confidence, he stated: “The way we train and compete. There are signs. I saw things in the games we played in USA and what did in the training sessions I like.
“After we won six Premier League in last eight years. When we start we never know if we’re going to win the Premier League but I see things I like even against Spurs.
“There are things I would like to do much, much better but that's normal at this stage of the season.”
While the boss was enthusiastic about our prospects, he was also keen to stress that the expectation should not be for his side to match some of the previously unprecedented feats earlier in his reign.
“We are not going to compare with the Centurions or four domestic trophies or four Premier Leagues in a row.
“We are going to lose. Before that I didn't know in that moment we had down. Nothing is linear and the same.
“There are things I like but maybe in two months I will say how wrong I was. What I’ve seen since the World Cup I like the things I recognise when you make a good season.
“That doesn’t mean you win titles but I like the principles. That's why I'm confident we'll be fine.”
City have shown glimpses of returning to the swashbuckling sides of previous seasons in recent months, with convincing victories over the likes of Al Ain, Juventus and Wolves.
However, they have been interspersed amongst defeats to Al-Hilal and Spurs that have dampened some of the excitement for fans.
In order to win titles, Guardiola is well aware of the need for improved consistency.
However, he refused to put a timescale on when fans can expect his team to put a run together.
“We will see through the results when we are able to win four, five, six games in a row, winning or competing well or being stable in many departments,” he said.
“It’s about conceding few and creating much more game by game more and more. After that, I will say the consistency is back.”
