There are things we need to do - Maresca on transfer window

Enzo Maresca has stressed there doesn’t need to be major surgery on his City squad this summer but he intimated he’d like to do some business as we gear up for the 2026/27 season.

Maresca has seen England ace Elliot Anderson arrive from Nottingham Forest, exiting starlet winger Jeremy Monga join up from Leicester City and former Academy graduate Pierce Charles head back through the doors from Sheffield Wednesday.

Meanwhile, legendary players Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake have departed the Club.

The transfer window is now open and new boss Maresca insisted ‘there are things we need to do’ with the Community Shield taking place against Arsenal in less than a fortnight and the Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth firmly in view, too, the following weekend.

“Fortunately this is a squad that doesn’t need to do many things,” he told media at a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash with K-League All Stars.

“At the same time, we already know the squad lost some important players with experience with Bernardo, John, Nathan…different players.

“For sure, there are things we need to do.

“Hugo [Viana, Sporting Director] is here. Also Ferran [Soriano, CEO] is here. We just try to speak day by day to see if we need to do something.

“For sure there are things we need to do. We are in communication every day.

“The reason I said there are things to do is because the transfer window is open and when it is open, anything can happen. It is August and then from September, when it’s closed, it is completely different.”

Maresca’s City take on K-League All Stars tomorrow, an assembled group of players to represent South Korea’s top-flight.

The 12:00 (UK) kick-off at the Seoul World Cup Stadium will be available globally on our channels, except in South Korea.

And Maresca revealed Ryan McAidoo, who enjoyed an impressive cameo in the 1-1 draw with Inter, our first game on this trip to the Far East – won’t be available due to a shoulder injury.

“We have many young players with us, and in the last game against Inter some of them played some minutes.

“Ryan McAidoo was good but even the rest. Unfortunately, McAidoo will be out tomorrow because he has a small problem with his shoulder - nothing important.

“Always City’s Academy has good players, it is exciting because of that.”

Maresca has been in charge of the Blues for just over a month but he insists he’s already seeing promising progress on the training fields as he looks to implement his style of play on this exiting, eager and emerging squad.

“General concept - defensively and offensively,” he said of what was starting to take shape.

“The way we want to defend and attack with some patterns.

“It’s a different idea we started to work on since I joined the club.

“For sure, we want to try to win games, that is the main thing but at the same moment we want to see the team improving day after day.”
