With the November international break now in the rear-view, Manchester City return to Premier League action this Saturday when they take on Newcastle United at St. James Park. Pep Guardiola’s side entered the international break off the back of a strong run of form and their 3-nil win over Liverpool showed that this City side is building into the season. They face a tough trip to St. James Park to take on Eddie Howe’s side but the match is an opportunity for City to claim a vital win away from home to continue their momentum.

Newcastle United have been inconsistent this season but have been strong at home.

Eddie Howe’s side enter Saturday’s match sitting 14th in the Premier League table. They have made an impressive start to their UEFA Champions League campaign but their Premier League form has been inconsistent. Away from home they’ve drawn three and lost three games so far this season. At home, they have won three games and lost two matches. Their form at home while it hasn’t been perfect does show that they are a tough team to beat in front of their passionate home support. That has always been the case with a Newcastle United side and this season’s Newcastle side is no exception.

Eddie Howe’s squad is packed with quality despite their inconsistent start to the new season. Newcastle’s midfield which contains Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Sandro Tonali is one of the more formidable in the Premier League. Joelinton and Sandro Tonali did appear to be in doubt for Saturday’s match but it has been reported that the pair will be available for Saturday’s match.

Up front, Newcastle have quality in their ranks. Jacob Murphy is a player who doesn’t get the headlines or plaudits he deserves. Murphy is a creative hub for Eddie Howe’s side and City must contain him at St. James Park. Anthony Gordon is an elite winger who has hurt City in the past. It does seem that he will be fit for Saturday’s match against Manchester City. Newcastle’s German striker Nick Woltemade scored three goals for Germany over the international break and his size and goal-scoring ability with pose a considerable threat to the Manchester City defence.

Despite the threat that Newcastle United pose, Manchester City have the opportunity to pick up an important three points.

Despite the quality in Newcastle’s squad, they do sit 14th in the Premier League. So they are beatable despite how well they typically play in front of their home support. For Manchester City the opportunity is there for them to pick up a valuable victory away from the Etihad at St. James Park. City are yet to put in a quality display away from home in the Premier League this season. Their 4-nil win over Wolves at Molineux on the opening weekend of the season was their best away performance of this season. They have fought and scrapped to a win over Brentford at the GTech Community Stadium and they picked a point against Arsenal with a dogged defensive performance at the Emirates Stadium.

We have yet to see City put in a quality and polished performance away from home this season. They have the opportunity to do that against Newcastle United. It won’t be easy but if Manchester City can pick up three points against Newcastle off the back of a quality performance it will set them up for the hectic schedule that awaits them.
