Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has invested in KRC Genk, his formative club, via NXTPLAY.
The club said in a statement on Monday that he had become a minority shareholder through the investment platform he co-founded, and that the value was not disclosed.
Courtois came through at Genk from 1999 until his departure in 2011. Now 34 and still playing, he is in line to take part in the World Cup with Belgium after another injury-hit season.
He described the move as a homecoming, and said his aim is to help the club grow and bolster its sporting ambitions, with an eye on lifting Limburg towards Europe’s summit.
Courtois is already a shareholder in Le Mans, promoted to Ligue 1, and CD Extremadura, promoted to Spain’s third tier, also through the same company. At Genk, he joins a wider plan aimed at generating up to €60m in new capital.
