After helping Liverpool secure a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, Wataru Endo is already focused on what comes next. His reflections are laced with a quiet determination and a sense of unfinished business, underlining the ambition that now drives the club under Arne Slot.
Endo’s arrival at Liverpool from VfB Stuttgart in 2023 may have gone under the radar, but his impact has been quietly effective. With 20 Premier League appearances during the 2024-25 title-winning campaign, the Japan international provided crucial depth and tactical discipline in midfield. Now, as Liverpool prepare for the 2025-26 season, Endo is already looking ahead.
Speaking on the Red Machine podcast, released by Kodansha, Endo shared his ambitions:“[When] I came to Liverpool, I really wanted to achieve [the] Premier League title. I feel like this is why I play football.”

That goal was realised last season as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy for the first time since 2020 and for the first time under Arne Slot, whose debut season delivered both silverware and renewed energy at Anfield.
Liverpool’s success in 2024-25 was not isolated. Endo had already won the Carabao Cup in his first season and views these early achievements as a foundation rather than a final destination.
“I hope this is just the beginning to achieve the titles. Because after I came here, I won the Carabao Cup [in the] first season and the Premier League [in the] second season. So, I just want to keep continuing to win titles with the fans,” he added.
Slot’s influence has clearly rejuvenated the squad. His modern approach, focused on structured pressing and attacking transitions, suited players like Endo, whose game is built on positional intelligence and tireless work rate.
Endo recognises the cultural and historical weight that comes with wearing the red shirt. The 20th league title did more than fill a cabinet, it pulled Liverpool level with Manchester United in one of English football’s most significant records.
“I knew that it means a lot to Liverpool fans because Liverpool had 19 titles and we needed one more title to equal Manchester United,” Endo said. “I was so happy to win the league with the fans, my teammates and all the staff.”
His remarks highlight more than personal satisfaction. They speak to a deeper understanding of what success means at Liverpool and the communal nature of achievement.
“To achieve this title [means] a lot to the fans, I knew that. The thing what I can do for Liverpool is to give 100 per cent on the pitch. I just want to win the title with the fans, so that’s what I tried to [do].
“I love Liverpool Football Club. We won titles every season, so I hope this keeps [on] going and we will share a lot of great moments together.”
As Arne Slot prepares his squad for another campaign, Wataru Endo remains a symbol of the work ethic and spirit that underpinned last season’s glory. The hunger for more is clear. The expectation is rising. For Liverpool, that’s exactly where they want to be.
