Liverpool have got a contract problem to solve over Ibrahima Konate and time is running out.

The French centre-back was signed for £35m from RB Leipzig back in 2021. A renewal in the intervening timeframe has fallen through the cracks and he is now into the final three months of his stay at Anfield.

That is unless Richard Hughes can get a last-minute renewal over the line for the 26-year-old although the signs are not promising.

Konate is reported to have been locked in talks with the club for over a year regarding a new deal. But so far no white smoke has appeared over Anfield and that plunges the France international’s future into immediate doubt.

Real Madrid and other European teams like Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are all reported to be working on a deal for Konate.

With his demands unmet by Liverpool it leaves the door open for a move to a top Champions League side. But rival interest in Konate is now emerging from the Premier League according to a new report in TEAMtalk.

Konate has been entitled to speak to overseas clubs about a free transfer since January but we are reaching a stage where Premier League teams will soon be able to get involved.

And unthinkable as it sounds right now either Manchester City or Chelsea can land a deal for Konate this summer.

“As the summer approaches, Liverpool also believe that some of their Premier League rivals have entered the conversation,” the report reads.

“Indeed, sources suggest that both Chelsea and Manchester City have held exploratory talks and are weighing up potential offers.

“However, it remains unclear whether those discussions have progressed into formal proposals to the player and his representatives.”

This would spell disaster for Richard Hughes as the club contemplate losing a key star to a domestic rival.

Conversations would then turn towards which defender can come into the club and replace Konate’s class and experience.

We could see a Juventus defender - either Pierre Kalulu or Gleison Bremer - arrive while Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck are also thought to be in the conversation.
