Focus falls on 21 June 1987, Lazio 1-0 Vicenza. Lazio began on -9 after Claudio Vinazzani’s non-committal phone reply, and wins were then worth two points. Before the finale Cagliari were down, Lazio and Taranto sat on 31, four sides on 32, and even victory might not suffice.

The Olimpico was packed long before kick-off, a sea of light blue and white, as Lazio created incessantly but Vicenza goalkeeper Ennio Dal Bianco kept them at bay.

On 83 minutes Antonio Acerbis took a throw to Fabio Poli, got it back and crossed, the clearance reached Vincenzo Esposito who fed Gabriele Podavini. His miskick became a low cross, Giuliano Fiorini spun and struck. Lazio won 1-0, and Vicenza, Catania and Cagliari went down while Lazio, Campobasso and Taranto entered a play-off.

This week also mourns Igor Protti, who died on 19 June 2026. Alongside Dario Hubner, he is the only player to top-score in Serie A, Serie B and Serie C1. He hit 24 for Bari in 1995-96, later scored seven for Lazio, then spearheaded Livorno’s rise.
