According to The Laziali, the week of 13-19 April has often proved pivotal for Lazio, featuring Scudetto pushes in 1974 and 2000, a 1950 top-four pursuit and remembrance of Luigi Saraceni.

On 16 April 1950, Lazio beat Inter 3-2 at the Stadio Nazionale. Enrique Flamini volleyed in from Aldo Puccinelli after Vittorio Sentimenti III’s pass, before Mario Magrini made it 2-0, then Istvan Nyers I replied. After the break Sentimenti III’s rocket restored a two-goal lead, Nyers I converted a penalty for 3-2, and Lazio held on to sit one point off third.

Other standouts this week: in 1957 Lazio beat Milan 3-0 through a Tozzi brace and a Vivolo penalty. In 1974 they came from behind to defeat Verona 4-2, trimming Juventus’ lead. In 1970 a 4-1 against Bari boosted Giorgio Chinaglia’s World Cup hopes.

In 2000, a breathless 3-3 at Fiorentina left Scudetto hopes seemingly shattered, Lazio slipping five points behind Juventus with four matches left. In 2018, despite falling behind twice, absurd refereeing decisions and a hostile crowd, Lazio edged Fiorentina 4-3.

We remember Luigi Saraceni, born in Rome on 28 September 1903. Fernando’s younger brother, he debuted in 1921, helped reach the 1923 final, made 112 appearances with eight goals, later serving the club off the pitch. He died in Rome on 20 April 1972.

Birthdays this week include Carlo Soldo, Nelson Gutiérrez, Matteo Guendouzi, Felipe Anderson, Mourad Meghni, Paolo Negro, Marcello Consiglio, Stefano Fiore, Patric, Enrique Flamini, Claudio Vinazzani, Valon Behrami and Gustav Isaksen.
