On April 7, 1974 Napoli and Lazio drew 3-3 in Naples. Sergio Clerici’s 18th-minute free-kick opened the scoring, Giorgio Chinaglia headed in from Sergio Petrelli to level, then Antonio Juliano restored the hosts’ lead before Chinaglia volleyed a 41st-minute equaliser.

After Giuseppe Bruscolotti went off, a penalty put Napoli 3-2 up through Clerici. In the 63rd minute Franco Nanni was fouled by Andrea Orlandini and Spartaco Landini, and Chinaglia converted to complete his hat-trick. Fausto Inselvini came on late and it finished all square.

Lazio came from behind three times and kept control of the title race. The table read Lazio 35, Juventus 32, Napoli 30, Fiorentina 29, Inter 29.

Istanbul-born Can Bartu, a rare dual international for Türkiye, shone for Fenerbahçe before moving to Serie A in 1961 with Fiorentina, then Venezia and Lazio. He returned to Fenerbahçe to win more titles and retired in 1970, having won 26 caps and scored six goals for Türkiye. He died on April 11, 2019.

Birthdays this week include Michaël Ciani, Martin Caceres, Paolo Carosi and Thomas Doll.
