Three centre-back options for Real Madrid to consider this summer

Real Madrid’s defensive issues this season have exposed one thing very clearly – the squad needs more reliability at centre-back.

Notably, recurring injury problems disrupted momentum, key defenders struggled with fitness issues throughout the year, and the backline rarely looked stable throughout the season.

Now, with David Alaba set to leave the club this summer, the need for a top-class centre-back has become impossible to ignore.

For large parts of the campaign, Real Madrid were forced to rotate defenders simply to manage physical problems.

Players returned before reaching full rhythm, partnerships changed every few weeks, and the lack of continuity hurt the team badly in both La Liga and Europe.

That situation has made central defence one of the biggest priorities ahead of the summer transfer window, especially with Jose Mourinho expected to begin a new era at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The club now needs leadership, reliability and someone capable of handling pressure at the highest level.

On that note, here are three defenders Los Blancos can consider this summer

Alessandro Bastoni

If Real Madrid are searching for elegance and composure in defence, Alessandro Bastoni feels like the ideal profile.

The Inter Milan defender has developed into one of the best centre-backs in European football thanks to his calmness on the ball, positional intelligence and ability to progress play from deep areas.

His left-footed profile would also give the team something they have lacked consistently in recent years, which a natural balance on the left side of defence.

With Eder Militao’s fitness issues becoming increasingly difficult to manage over the last two seasons, the team has often looked uncomfortable while building from the back under pressure.

On that note, Bastoni would instantly improve that aspect of the team.

Interestingly, Barcelona had monitored Bastoni closely in recent weeks, but recent developments suggest the Catalans have now cooled down their interest due to financial concerns and changing priorities in the transfer market.

That could leave the path clearer for Madrid if they decide to push seriously for the Italian defender.

One small detail has also attracted attention among supporters online, as Bastoni recently liked a social media post related to Mourinho’s expected return to Real Madrid.

This is something fans immediately interpreted as a possible hint regarding his future.

Of course, signing him would not be easy, as Inter view Bastoni as one of the foundations of their project and would demand €70 million for his signing.

However, with the political landscape at its all-time high around the club, this transfer could become a reality

Cristian Romero

While Bastoni represents control, Cristian Romero would bring aggression and personality to Real Madrid’s defence.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender plays with intensity that immediately changes the mood of a backline.

Romero thrives in physical battles, embraces pressure and would bring the kind of edge Real Madrid sometimes lacked during difficult moments this season.

Notably, his situation in England has also become increasingly tense.

This is because Romero’s relationship with Tottenham has deteriorated following another frustrating campaign, and there is growing belief that both sides could consider a separation this summer.

For Mourinho, Romero feels like a very natural fit stylistically, especially since he has managed the Argentine during his time with the London club.

The Portuguese coach has always valued defenders with aggression and strong mentality, something that Romero provides.

Josko Gvardiol

Josko Gvardiol may represent the smartest long-term investment of all.

The Manchester City defender combines recovery pace, technical quality and tactical flexibility at a top level.

The 24-year-old can operate as both a centre-back and left-back, making him incredibly valuable across a long season.

There is also an interesting factor surrounding his future. Since Pep Guardiola has decided to leave Man City, several players could reconsider their situations at the club.

And that uncertainty may eventually create an opening for Madrid to explore a move for Gvardiol.

Holding a market value of €70 million, the Croatian defender would be a very different profile than Bastoni and Romero.
