Three clubs will use Estadio Azteca from Apertura 2026, according to Americayya.net, with América among them.
The stadium has been under renovation for years to meet 2026 World Cup requirements. An ambitious plan for a hotel, shopping centre and wider exterior works was dropped after legal issues and neighbour opposition.
Work shifted to the interior. The dressing-room area has been rebuilt, with player access moving to the centre of the pitch. Seating has been upgraded and new exterior LED lighting will change colour depending on the home side.
América will return to the Estadio Azteca (Banorte) for Apertura 2026. Cruz Azul will also play there, having left during the works, first to Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes then to Ciudad Universitaria.
The report adds that Atlante will buy Mazatlán’s franchise to return to the top flight, and intends to rent the Azteca for home matches. It would not be the first time three teams shared the ground, América, Necaxa and Atlante have done so before.
