"Three goals and three points is amazing" – Reaction to #RBLBMG

RB Leipzig started the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with a 3-0 win at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach. After the game, head coach Martín Demichelis, Rocco Reitz and Ridle Baku were all pleased with the performance, before acknowledging that there is still work to be done. Managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer also spoke of the development the team have undergone.

Martín Demichelis on...

...his first Bundesliga home game as a head coach:

"I've often said that my dream was to coach in the Bundesliga and at RB Leipzig. The fact that we had a sold-out crowd and such a fantastic tifo before the game today was something very special."

...the way his side played:

"Attacking with a lot of intensity, both with and without the ball, needs to be one of the strongest weapons in our arsenal. With the exception of the last ten or 12 minutes, we did that very well today."

...the successful start to the season:

"Three goals and three points is amazing. Nevertheless, we still need to take it day by day and week by week. We still have several things we need to work on, so we need to continue to work hard and say focused on what's next."

Rocco Reitz on...

...facing his former club:

"I tried to think about it as little as possible, because I couldn't change anything about it anyways. I was obviously very happy to see some of my former teammates again. I made a lot of friends while I was there. It was a very, very special game for me."

...his goal:

"It was a really well-worked attack. Christo's pass went exactly where it should, allowing me to take just one touch before finishing. He played a big part in the goal as well. It wa great to have been able to finish the move and to help the team like that."

...the game as a whole:

"We struggled a bit when they put us under pressure at the start. Gladbach were able to get the ball past our first row of players and also had a big chance when they hit the post. I think that we did well to withstand that pressure and were able to assume more control over the game and score. That's what matters in the end."

Ridle Baku on...

...the successful start to the season:

"It's a great feeling to start the season in this manner, especially in front of a crowd like this. No team really knows where they stand at the start of the season. Winning 3-0 at home is a bit of a message for the rest of the league. However, we know that we still have a lot to do ahead of our upcoming games."

...his goal:

"Football isn't always that complicated - sometimes it all just comes down to timing and quality. It was a really well-worked goal. I'm happy to have scored and that I was able to help the team, but I'm more happy to have picked up three points."

...Micho's style of play:

"It's about doing more out of possession, pressing higher up the pitch and being more aggressive. We did that very well today. We also won possession on several occasions in Gladbach's half. That's definitely something that we want to define us this season. Together with the quality that we have as a team, it will be very tough to beat us."

Marcel Schäfer on...

...the performance:

"The team did very well for much of the game. I wasn't entirely happy with the last few minutes, because we switched off a little then. Overall, I'm satisfied - it was a good performance with some great goals, as well as some chances that we didn't take."

...the RBL style of play:

"I think that we saw 'RBL football' last year as well, because we were successful and finished third. It's only natural that, even after a season like that, we see room for improvement. I think we saw today that our squad is on the right path."

...Rocco Reitz:

"Rocco played well, covered a lot of ground, completed a lot of sprints, won possession and managed to showcase his quality on the pitch. I think I said two or three minutes before he scored that I would be taking him off at that point, if it were up to me. But fortunately for us, I'm not the coach. I think we can all understand that this was a special game for him. We're happy to have him here with us, because he's a very important player. We will help him reach his full potential - there's definitely a lot that we can still expect to see from him."
