Claudio Echeverri will not be headed to AS Roma on loan from Manchester City this summer, despite recent links involving the pair, according to new reports.
The latest development comes just days after Sky Italy reported that the Serie A giants were showing interest in the highly-rated 19-year-old playmaker, with expectations that a temporary switch could be explored.
However, new details have now poured cold water on that prospect, with AS Roma ruled out of the running as Manchester City firm up their strategy for the player’s short-term development following the return to pre-season training for their first-team squad.
Echeverri made his City debut in May’s FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace at Wembley, before enjoying brief appearances in both the Premier League and FIFA Club World Cup, where he scored his first goal for the club against Al Ain.
Despite those encouraging signs, the Argentine is seemingly not yet in line for regular minutes under Pep Guardiola, prompting Manchester City officials to assess loan destinations that can support his long-term integration.
Interest from Girona remains live, as the Catalan side continue to work closely with City on player development via the City Football Group network. However, previous reports from Spain have acknowledged the complexity of any deal due.
Now, according to the latest transfer update from MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Sverre Nypan is among the list of young names set to leave Manchester City on loan this summer for his development, just weeks after arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Rosenborg.
It is further revealed that the talk is the Norwegian midfielder should be followed by both Vitor Reis and Claudio Echeverri in loan agreements, with the pair having joined City in the last January transfer window.
While Olympique Lyonnais hope to land a Manchester City talent this summer and Girona are an obvious potential destination due to their City Football Group links, the report establishes that Echeverri is not expecting to head to AS Roma despite recent links in Italy.
The latest developments reinforce City’s loan strategy, centred on giving elite youth prospects meaningful game time while monitoring their growth closely. Nypan in particular is viewed as a long-term midfield option and will be given time to mature away from the Etihad.
As for Vitor Reis, the £29.6 million January arrival from Palmeiras possesses the physical profile and technical potential that have convinced staff that regular senior football is the next logical step for him. Girona may again be a viable landing spot, particularly given their history with developing CFG prospects.
With Roma seemingly now out of the picture, attention will turn to other continental clubs who can guarantee regular starts for Claudio Echeverri while maintaining a competitive level. Manchester City are expected to be thorough in their vetting process, ensuring that any loan move includes assurances over development priorities and playing style compatibility.
Final decisions are expected in the coming weeks as Manchester City continue to streamline their squad for the season ahead, with clarity on Echeverri, Nypan, and Reis set to emerge well before the transfer window closes.
