The Spanish Super Cup semi-final victory of FC Barcelona over Athletic Club was so comfortable that it almost felt routine. Hansi Flick’s side dominated from start to finish, imposed their rhythm early, and never allowed the game to drift into uncertainty.
On television, the match appeared to be a professional job well executed. Inside the stadium, however, SPORT highlighted several moments that largely went unnoticed.
1: Roony Bardghji’s unusual celebration
The most striking of them came in the celebrations, or rather, the lack of them. Barça celebrated the opening goals with enthusiasm, but as the scoreline grew, the emotional response faded.
The clearest example was Roony Bardghji’s third goal. The Swedish winger sprinted down the touchline searching for teammates, found none, and instinctively embraced Flick instead.
Unsure of what to do next, he drifted toward the bench, where a member of staff offered him a bottle of water, thinking he was tired.
2: A Bilbao fan moves sections
Even far from home, Barcelona’s presence was impossible to ignore. Chants of Barça echoed across the stadium, vibrant and relentless, creating a wave of energy that seemed to drown out any other voices.
One Athletic supporter, wearing a Bilbao jersey and surrounded by a sea of Blaugrana fans, soon felt the pressure. Friendly but insistent gestures and calls from the crowd encouraged him to move to a quieter section.
After a few minutes, he relented, walking across the stands with a smile, no intervention from security required. The scene highlighted not just the passion of the fans but the unmistakable dominance of Barcelona’s supporters, who made it feel as if the stadium belonged to them.
3: Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams share a moment
Another subtle moment captured by SPORT involved Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. Despite the summer’s transfer rumours and Nico’s failed move to Barcelona, their rapport was evident throughout the match.
Gestures of familiarity were frequent, reflecting their strong bond from the Spanish national team. A conversation between the two in the tunnel at half-time lasted over a minute, with Nico appearing serious and focused on the match, but clearly at ease around his Barca friends.
