The Lionesses were crowned European champions for the second successive time this summer
With the Sports Personality of the Year awards just over two months away, there could be three women’s teams fighting it out for the team award.
England saw three women’s teams enjoy a successful year, including two in football and one in rugby.
After disappointment again in the WSL, Arsenal redeemed their season with a Champions League title.
The Gunners were crowned champions of the competition for the second time in history and they remain the only British team to have won the prestigious tournament.
There was no easy games for Arsenal on the way to glory this year with Renee Slegers’ team facing Real Madrid and Lyon en route to the final.
The North-London outfit cruised past their world class European opponents though to set up a mouth-watering final.
It was Barcelona who came up against Arsenal in the final and despite being heavy underdogs, the WSL team lifted the trophy in Lisbon.
Following such an impressive European campaign, it is no surprise to see the Gunners up for a prize at the Sports Personality of the Year awards.
Of course shortly after Arsenal’s Champions League success, much of the squad jetted off to Euro 2025 in Switzerland.
England got off to a shaky start in the tournament and after a loss to start in their first group game, the reigning champions looked to be in trouble.
But despite faltering in the groups, England kicked into gear and went on to win the tournament.
Late drama was the story of the summer as countless times the Lionesses found themselves in trouble late on.
Sarina Wiegman’s team managed to fight off all the opposition though, with late goals in almost every game saving the team.
After winning from such an improbable position in Switzerland, the Lionesses are a prime contender for BBC Sports Team of the Year.
The Lionesses have already won this award following success at Euro 2022.
Chloe Kelly is now the favourite to win Sports Personality of the Year following her summer with Arsenal and England.
It looked for all the world as if Arsenal would fight it out with the Lionesses for this year’s team award.
However a late contender arrived on the scene over the weekend as England’s Red Roses lifted the women’s rugby World Cup.
England absolutely destroyed their opposition throughout the tournament and came out comfortable winners of the competition for a third time.
Following three routs in the group stage over Samoa, USA and Australia, the Red Roses faced a home nation in the quarter-final.
Scotland proved to be no match for England’s dominant team though and easy wins against France and Canada followed to crown the nation as world champions once more.
The Red Roses will be hoping to make it back to back rugby winners in the team award, after Wigan Warriors were named team of the year in 2024.
