One of Mainz’s January signings, Phillip Tietz, has played a key role in revitalising what was once a blunt attack. While the goals have not flowed freely, his physical presence and intelligent link-up play in a front two have been crucial to the 05ers’ improved form.

Tietz opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 13th minute, a clear sign of a striker rediscovering his confidence after a difficult spell of ten games without a goal. The forward alluded to that struggle post-match:

“I went through a difficult period which affected me. I measure myself by the goals I score - it’s what I’m paid to do. I’ve been thinking a lot and working closely with the coaches. I’m just so pleased that I was able to score twice today and regain my confidence.”

Fisnik Asllani equalised ten minutes later for the hosts with a superb strike from the edge of the area. However, Mainz once again demonstrated their newfound resilience under Fischer, defending resolutely and biding their time before striking the decisive blow 11 minutes from time. Tietz reacted quickest to poke home his own rebound from close range, securing his first brace for the club and taking his tally to three goals in 13 appearances.

Tietz was delighted to have helped guide his side to another vital victory:

“The main thing is that we got all three points, and I’m just glad I was able to help the team. I’m extremely happy that today turned out so well.”

Wouter Burger came close to levelling shortly after Tietz’s second, striking the post from long range with Daniel Batz beaten - a moment that had Mainz supporters holding their breath before the ball bounced to safety.

Batz acknowledged the fortune involved but was quick to praise his teammate’s decisive contribution:

“Of course, we had a bit of luck with Burger hitting the post, but right now that’s going our way. That’s why we’re happy to have taken three points here today. Phillip got his reward and is deservedly the match-winner.”

The victory lifts Mainz up to ninth place - a remarkable turnaround from their position at the foot of the table when Fischer took charge. Attention now turns to Thursday’s Conference League quarter-final first leg, as Strasbourg visit the MEWA Arena.
