Tiknizyan Moves Up Olympiacos LB Shortlist | OneFootball

The left-back question at Olympiacos has been unusually difficult to read this summer. Several credible options have appeared. Francisco Moura offers proven production and experience in Portugal. Anass Salah-Eddine has represented a younger, technically interesting solution.

Other names have surfaced and faded. Nair Tiknizyan has remained there throughout. What changed Sunday evening is his position in the hierarchy.

Alexis Virvilis reports that Olympiacos are now evaluating the Armenian international considerably more aggressively and that he sits higher than several of the other candidates currently being considered.

That is worth separating from the normal rhythm of transfer rumors. Olympiacos already liked Tiknizyan.

The new development is that they increasingly appear to prefer him.

The most useful part of the new information concerns Red Star. The Serbian club are not reportedly rejecting a sale. They are delaying the conversation.

Their position, according to the report, is that the club wants its European qualifying campaign clarified before sitting down to evaluate incoming proposals. That distinction matters enormously. When negotiations stop because the seller dislikes the price, the transfer is in trouble.

When negotiations are postponed because the seller needs the player for specific competitive fixtures, the problem is primarily timing.

Olympiacos therefore know roughly when the market may open. That gives Geoffrey Moncada a decision.

Does he wait for Tiknizyan?

Or does another left-back become available on acceptable terms first?

Why Tiknizyan fits Mendilibar

Tiknizyan's appeal becomes clearer when examining what Olympiacos increasingly require from the position.

Mendilibar does not use his full-backs simply to defend.

They must:

Tiknizyan's career has repeatedly shown that attacking dimension.

He has played both as a conventional left-back and in more advanced left-sided roles. His profile therefore gives Mendilibar the possibility of changing the structure without making a substitution. That versatility is particularly valuable in Europe.

The symmetry with Rodinei is interesting

Olympiacos are simultaneously considering restoring Rodinei to right-back against NEC. If Tiknizyan ultimately arrived, Mendilibar could have two extremely aggressive full-backs.

That would raise the attacking ceiling considerably. It would also create a tactical problem.

Two full-backs attacking simultaneously means Olympiacos need excellent transition protection from midfield.

This connects directly with the club's pursuit of additional central midfielders.

A player such as Santiago Hezze—or another mobile 6/8—becomes essential because somebody must protect the channels whenever the full-backs advance.

Transfers cannot be evaluated independently. Tiknizyan makes more tactical sense if Olympiacos also build a midfield capable of covering him.

He brings something different from a conservative left-back

A safer recruitment decision would be to sign a defender whose greatest attributes are positioning and one-against-one resistance. Tiknizyan represents a more ambitious idea.

Olympiacos would be buying another player capable of creating offensive superiority from the back line.

Against Greek opponents defending deeply, that matters. A full-back who can continually advance forces a defensive winger backward.

That can create:

Olympiacos sometimes struggle when opponents successfully force the attack into predictable circulation.

An aggressive full-back can break that predictability without needing a winger to win every one-on-one duel.

There is still a defensive question

The attacking upside should not obscure the scouting question. An aggressive left-back naturally leaves space.

That is not inherently bad.

The important question is how efficiently he recovers and how well the rest of the team protects his forward movement. Mendilibar's football accepts a degree of defensive risk in exchange for territorial aggression.

Tiknizyan therefore needs to be evaluated in the context of that system rather than through a traditional interpretation of what a full-back should look like.

Olympiacos would not necessarily be trying to eliminate his adventurous tendencies. They may be specifically buying them.

His age is attractive

At 27, Tiknizyan sits in a useful recruitment window. He is not a prospect who requires years of development.

But he is also not a short-term veteran acquisition. Olympiacos could reasonably expect his strongest immediate seasons while still retaining some future transfer value.

That seems consistent with the broader recruitment balance Moncada appears to be pursuing:

players ready for Champions League football now, without abandoning asset value completely.

The price is still the great unknown

This is where the story remains incomplete. Red Star bought Tiknizyan from Lokomotiv Moscow in June 2025 on a three-year contract. Contemporary reports put the transaction at approximately €1.7 million plus €300,000 in potential bonuses.

That does not mean Olympiacos can acquire him for anything close to that amount. His value within Red Star's squad, European qualification and competition from other clubs can all raise the price substantially.

Until Red Star actually open negotiations, any current asking-price figure should be treated cautiously.

There is another interesting European clue

Tiknizyan's situation has attracted additional attention because previous transfer coverage noted his limited or absent involvement in parts of Red Star's Champions League qualifying campaign, helping fuel speculation about a possible transfer.

That remains context rather than proof of an imminent departure. But combined with Sunday's report, the picture becomes more coherent:

Olympiacos want the player.

The player is clearly on the international market.

Red Star may consider selling.

The obstacle is when they are prepared to negotiate.

That is considerably more concrete than a generic scouting link.

What happens to Moura?

Francisco Moura should not automatically be removed from consideration.

But the wording of Sunday's report suggests Tiknizyan has gained ground internally. If Olympiacos decide he is genuinely their preferred solution, Moura may effectively become the alternative they can accelerate if Red Star delay too long or demand too much.

That creates useful leverage.

Moncada's first major decision may be whether to wait

The broader transfer directive around Olympiacos reportedly demands immediate reinforcement. That conflicts slightly with Red Star's timetable. Waiting can deliver the preferred player. Waiting can also cost the club alternatives.

This is where recruitment leadership matters.

Moncada has to decide how much better Olympiacos believe Tiknizyan is than the other available left-backs.

If the difference is marginal, move elsewhere. If the scouting department believes he is clearly the best tactical fit, waiting several additional days may be entirely rational. That is the central story now.
