The safest thing for Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes to do would be to tie down the former AZ boss for the long term and avoid a situation where he’s tempted by projects elsewhere.

However the last few weeks may have given the Reds’ decision-makers some pause for thought. Liverpool spent £450m improving Slot’s squad over the summer - breaking the British transfer record twice in the process.

But the Anfield side are now on a historically poor run of results with four defeats in a row. Three Premier League defeats in succession - as well as one more in the Champions League - have sunk the Reds.

Slot is yet to get the best out of the new players at his disposal - and is increasingly putting lopsided lineups out on the field.

Insider shares what he's heard about Slot contract

Transfer insider Dean Jones for TEAMtalk has now warned that “time will tell” whether or not Liverpool will offer Arne Slot a new, improved deal.

And rather than preparing for a long-term dynastic reign in the shape of Rafa Benitez or Jurgen Klopp, Slot could soon be looking at a Liverpool legacy like Brendan Rodgers.

“I have heard that early, initial contact was already made in terms of opening more formal conversations about extending his contract and how that could work, so it is a gradual process that has been expected to become more active across the course of this season,” he said.

Let's hope Slot works things out

“It’s not something they have to decide today or tomorrow because his current deal runs to the summer of 2027 but ideally they would be in a position to do so by the end of the season.

“Liverpool see this as a project that can work long term like a Jurgen Klopp or Rafa Benitez career but obviously results will also dictate the length of his reign.

“Maybe he ends up somewhere in between like Brendan Rodgers – only time will tell.

“For now though there is no knee-jerk reaction to the four game slump in terms of how they see the future.

“They will stand by him and hope that this turns around so that everyone is happy with how things are progressing so that they can secure a longer term future.”

If Liverpool decide to part ways with Slot - and right now there is no question they are even considering it - then the action would be much cheaper if he remains on his current deal.

Signing an extension - that would no doubt come with a pay rise - would leave Liverpool facing a hefty payoff.

Let’s hope it does not become an issue and Slot can get his title-winning squad back to their best very soon.
